Has someone read this book?

Judo Forum Topics - 5 hours 59 min ago
I noticed CK made a reference in another post to Advances in Judo Biomechanics Research: " Modern Evolution on Ancient Roots" by Attilio Sacripanti .

It sounds an interesting book but is rather expensive.

Has anyone read it? If so can you review it please?

I wonder how helpful it will be for coaching for competitions.

Newaza against bigger guys

Judo Forum Topics - 8 hours 46 min ago
Hi,

I weigh around 60kg so I am one of the lightest males in my club, I struggle against bigger guys (30-50 kg heavier than me) as they can use their strength and size against me. I usually end up getting laid upon and it's rather hard to escape.

How much can superior technique make up for the size difference? In reality we are probably around the same skill level but it just can become a bit disheartening to not make much progress. I wonder if I will ever be able to beat them if we stay at the same skill level but they are always significantly heavier than me? I get really tired doing newaza randori due to the difference in size, I feel as if my instincts kick in and I use more strength against them. On the rare occasion I practice against someone who is the same size, it's almost like a holiday for me, I can take it much easier and try to focus on techniques rather than thrashing around to escape.

The Japanese men's heavyweights

Watching Kamikawa putting another passive performance, Haga (a very promising judoka) getting caught by his opponent due to a moment of inattention and when you take in account results from the recent years of the -100 +100 divisions. You kinda get worried about the divisions that produced us Yamashita, Inoue, sato, Shinohara, Ishii (yeah I know ), Suzuki, Muneta, Endo and many more.
They don't seem to produce them the way they used to at the heavyweight classes. What changed in the recent years (aside from Riner of course) that has made them struggle so much in these two divisions which they traditionally dominate.

Sherlock Holmes - judo shodan

Judo Forum Topics - Sun, 02/05/2012 - 23:38
In the BBC drama - Sherlock Holmes - set in contemporary times - Sherlock appears to be a judo shodan: http://wearsherlock....ificate-seen-in and http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/sherlock's+bedroom

The large diploma does not look like any Japanese Kodokan diploma I have seen, though it is similar to the upper half of the bi-lingual certificates that the Kodokan issue.

The name is not Sherlock Holmes though - I have translated the Katakana as Ju.fu.ri.i = Jeffery / De.i = D. / Pe.i. shu = Pace. I cannot actually see the text on the prop on the wall.

Finding competitions (Preferably in Asia)

Judo Forum Topics - Sun, 02/05/2012 - 22:14
Hi there,

I am finally resuming Judo after a long break (trained as a kid/teenager). There is no official club in the area I live in (northern Thailand), but I found myself a group of people who train together regularly, including a very competent instructor and I am getting back in the game progressively. It's not an actual club, so there is no membership or anything of the sort.

I would like to start competing again, but apparently, there is only one competition per year in Thailand in which I could have entered, and I missed it.

Any idea where I can find good competitions and what I would need to do to qualify?

I am 35 y.o, 115kg and I can consider traveling out of the country for a good competition.

Also, I have seen the term "open competition" in various places. I thought "open competition" meant that anyone could enter, but looking more closely, it seems that they require competitors to be selected/presented by a judo association of some kind. What is the meaning of "Open competition"?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help and I hope to meet some of you on the mats in a not too distant future.

Cheers,
Sylvain

NB: I originally posted this in "Competitions" but I really it's probably more at home in this subforum. Either way, I hope I can get some answers.
