Problems with customer support Soft Judo DVD purchase.

Judo Forum Topics - Wed, 01/27/2010 - 17:50
Hello

About two weeks ago I ordered, and paid for, LEGENDARY SOFT JUDO from ALLFIGHTINGSPORTS.COM. Today I made a call, from the support call number found on their website, to this company and asked about my order. I left a message with BRAIN BIRCH, the customer support person, and I mentioned my order. He told me that he new nothing about soft judo dvds or any of the other dvds they sell on the website and I must of had a wrong number!

Well, latter that evening I checked the website and I did have the correct number and Brian Birch was the customer support person. So I called again. This time he answered and after I mentioned again about Soft Judo and my order he told me to hold on the line for a minute. I waited 10-15 minutes before hanging up..he never retured! I called 3 more times and no one answered the phone...just MR. Birches answering machine. I left a few messages and sent an email and had not gotten a reply back.

Anyone else have problems with this company and Brian Birch? They suppose to have great customer support, least says so on website, but they failed horribly in their actions!

Be carefull if ordering from ALLFIGHTINGSPORTS.COM for the LEGENDARY SOFT JUDO or any other DVD.

Two simple sleeve grip breaks when trunk held (do-osae)

two simple sleeve grip breaks when in someone's trunk hold

submissions101 vid

if you have any others please share, if you know any grip breaks for standing, please share those too, or post vids of them

The issue of grip breaking and getting grips is not really discussed a lot, but is a very important. Afterall, you cannot grapple someone until you can grip them or hold them. I guess most people just power their way out, but why not use an energy saving tech. I hear aikido deals a lot with grip breaking. Anyone here ever train aikido? Does the judo curriculum have anything specific for grip breaking?

Referee allows 25 seconds of ne-waza before Matte

Judo Forum Topics - Wed, 01/27/2010 - 16:43
Spanish Nationals 2010- Matsumoto(JPN) Karakas(Hun) here is a match where the referee actually allowed up to 25 seconds of ne waza action before calling matte. Sure it's technically allowed but when was the last time you actually saw it?

Matsumoto is relentless, a serious ne waza fighter. So someone is still teaching that in Japan. Her last foray de-turtling Karakas is slick, leading directly into kami-shiho gatame.

For Sale: Mizuno Shiai Judogi Blue sz. 4

Judo Forum Topics - Wed, 01/27/2010 - 16:30
Backgrounder: I bought this judogi from Vin at Kodokangear a few weeks ago. Last few gi I got ended up a bit too small for my liking, thus I sold them recently here on this forum. This time I thought I was being smart by going up half a size and despite Vin telling me I should stick with my usual sz 3.5 as the Shiai was a different animal from my old Ichiban, I ordered a sz. 4, and wouldn’t ya know it, it ended up being just a wee bit looser than I like!!! This judogi, being pre-shrunk, of course, refused to shrink more than a few cms on the sleeves and pant legs despite several super-hot wash & dry sessions, which was OK, but still left a bit too much room for me in the body. Thus, instead of holding on to a gi I'm not gonna be too happy with, I would like to sell it while it is still practically brand-new except for a few washes. So here ya go ...

Details: I would like to offer for sale, one latest model Mizuno SHIAI Judogi in Blue color, size 4. Bought 2-3 weeks ago, only worn for trying on, washed and dried several times in super-hot. It’s a great Judogi, softer than my old stiff scratchy Ichiban or Toraki Gold! Nice thick lapels, wider sleeves (then again that’s as per current IJF regs so we all just have to get used to that!), solid pants that cinch up really well (unlike my Ichiban pants!!!) Overall very well-constructed. I am 5’9” or so in height, weigh around 175lbs, suit size 40R, pants 33Wx30L. However, please note I had bought this same judogi in White sz. 4 from Hatashita, which I sold to a dojo-mate last week, and he is same height as me if not an inch shorter, weighs less too, but due to longer arms & different body (wider shoulders than me I think), the Judogi fits him well. So anyways, to make things less confusing ... if you wear a sz. 4 in other Mizuno, this one should fit you well.

I would like to sell this for US$ 140.00, (EDIT: NOW price dropped to US$125) which will include shipping cost to Continental US (lower 48 states). Anyplace else shipping may be a bit more, let’s discuss. Paypal preferred but I may consider personal checks or postal money orders as well, except of course, this will delay shipping. Please contact me at topjor AT hotmail dot com.

Thank you very much!

Mods, like last time, I will inform as soon as this is sold.

p.s. I'm in NYC, so if anybody from the area is interested to check out/buy this gi, perhaps we could meet up in the city itself. Thanks!!!

Private judo lessons / Pacific North West?

Judo Forum Topics - Wed, 01/27/2010 - 09:38
I am interested in some private judo lessons to improve some areas I am weak at (since I find that it is impossible to get enough personalized attention at class to actually work the elements I want to work on), but I have heard of no clubs that actually offer same (or list it on their site), and it feels a bit uncomfortable asking. Judo has its roots as the 'poor mans' sport' and many clubs keep membership low, which I respect (and enjoy!) but I would like to know if any instructors are offering/interested in offering private lessons, especially in the Pacific North West area. (I did notice a few eastcoast places offering private lessons. Something about 3000 miles flight to class made me pass, however).

My Background: I'm an adult, active competitor, brown/Ikkyu at the 90k (maybe one day 81k) weight-class.

Any advice would be welcome!

Knee Pad Recommendations

Judo Forum Topics - Wed, 01/27/2010 - 07:58
Hi.

I am a rather tall judoka, and have recently been busing my knee rather badly when finishing throws. Because of this I have decided to start using knee pads. I have tried a few different volleyball kneepads, but most don't fit, and those that do become shin pads after a few throws. I was thinking of moving to wrestling knee pads. Does anyone have similar experience, and perhaps some recommendations?

I am looking for knee pads that appear to have good amounts of padding, go high up and low down the leg (hoping this prevents movement), and are rather cool. Poking around the internet I came across the Brute Torq, but I am up to any suggestions. Thank you very much.

Stick and stones ...

Judo Forum Topics - Wed, 01/27/2010 - 05:16
Gentle Judo Forums Members,

This morning I was chatting with another Forum member about the tone of the Forum as of late. Several things occurred to me after reflecting on the topic a bit more about the general concept of freedom of speech, and how we as judoka respond to verbal (or written) provocation.

Clearly, there are patterns that are seen on the Forum. A person with a huge ego and a thin skin coupled with an inability to express complex thoughts might be considered amusing. Yet some people clearly get truly angry at what they read here.

Conversely, some might be taking offense where none is intended. I happen to think that a personality that interprets everything they read as an attack on them has another type of ego problem.

Both of these are certainly things that every person struggles to control, but I think that like our judo, skill comes with practice?

Please share your opinions about the following.

1. The World. Jigoro clearly intended our art to be a fraternity of gentlemen (and ladies). Standards of gentlemanly and ladylike behavior vary around the world and I have found that the founder's home country tends to be the most mannerly country in the world. So if we adopt those standards in judo, the bar is set pretty high. Does the Forum think that a higher standard of personal behavior is required of judoka?

2. The dojo. Do verbal exchanges in your dojo ever escalate into physical confrontations? Is that acceptable to your sensei, does he or she look the other way ... or figure someone has it coming ... or even take sides? Does this happen more than once a year, for example? Or is a certain amount of good-natured teasing and witty banter tolerated ... but is the expectation that it will stop when someone is clearly getting hurt? Do people back down and apologize when they have offended regardless of their judo skill, and are people that want to solve problems with their fists sent home?

3. The person. What we say among friends might be different than what we would say in public. I am interested in where my friends on the Forum think the line is, and what the indications are that signal the line to be crossed from civil to rude behavior. More than that, how does each of react personally when someone else crosses that line? Do we share the opinion that words, no matter how venomous, cannot hurt unless we allow them to do so?

Let's talk about manners in judo, and tolerance. If this digresses into "one of those" then JudoSensei will be very disappointed, the topic of censorship is closed and it would be very rude, in my opinion, to defy his wishes that we back off of that for a while. This is, after all, his house.

Cheers.

Bill

Uchi-mata sukashi

Judo Forum Topics - Wed, 01/27/2010 - 05:08
At the dojo last week. Two experienced black belts were doing Randori. The attacker would be about two weight categories heavier. The uchi-mata attack was a fully committed one and fairly quick, but was deftly countered by the defender using uchi-mata sukashi. It was a delight to watch.

The defender, our provincial coach and a former Olympic competitor told me " I learned it out of survival while training around the world."

Given how popular uchi-mata is with high level competitors that makes good sense to me.

Below is a link to one example during the 2001 All Japan Shiai. Inoue is defending against what appears to be a much heavier opponent, though it's all much slower than what I witnessed. From the expression on uke's face, it shows how devastating it is psychologically. Not only have you been thrown but realize that, mostly, you threw yourself.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAWweEE2QR4

It's is a more advanced technique. Who uses it? How and why did you learn it? How many here teach it?

Found some nice knives with great prices and free shipping

Judo Forum Topics - Tue, 01/26/2010 - 18:47
Hey, I found some fantastic looking knives with great prices and free shipping. The website is www.liangdianup.com and these LDU Company people have bayonet knives, folders, switchblades, out the front knives, butterfly knives, and a bunch more. The web address for all of the knives is http://www.liangdianup.com/knives_1.htm
I like the all black Extrema Ratio bayonet knife the best but I also like the throwing stars.
