Protecting your health

Judo Forum Topics - Fri, 08/20/2010 - 23:24
In the rush to train with intensity, "realisim", etc. people seem to have forgotten an important budo principle. That is to protect your body and your health. Judo is supposed to contribute to your physical and mental well being, not be the cause of its downfall. Do medals and trophies make up for ruined knees and backs? It is nice to be able to bend your knees after age 40.

This does not mean that you cannot train or fight hard, but that you should also exercise reason and avoid injuring yourself.

This is not a mamby pamby wimpo attitude but was and actual consideration for the samurai. To damage your body through training so you were not able to be at your best during actual combat was considered unspeakably stupid. You can bet if some samurai captain came by the barracks to get the men together for a raid and everyone was busted up from training too hard, that crap would stop immediately.

Shiai is not our combat as Judoka, shiai is only training. Everyday life is our combat.

I was wondering if anyone has ever trained there. That is the Judo school of Flavio Canto in Brazil, and I really want to go and train there next year, but when I contact them I get no responce. He's one of my judo idols and training with him and his team and even taking a couple private classes would be incredible.

Throwing People From Behind?

Judo Forum Topics - Fri, 08/20/2010 - 19:11
Yesterday during randori I was behind my opponent and slammed him to the ground. My sensei said to me that I wasn't allowed to do this. Are you allowed to do this in Judo or competition?

Its when your directly behind your opponent (his buttocks facing your groin). I have seen this throw when in this position the person behind picks the person in front up and slams him on the mat, back first. Think its some kind of suicide throw.

Judo America Development Tournament

Judo Forum Topics - Fri, 08/20/2010 - 07:36
Judo America will be hosting a development tournament for juniors and seniors on September 19 in San Diego. We will be using the old rules as far as allowed techniques. We also don't use penalties to "manage" the matches. Consequently, more real Judo is performed at our tournaments.
