Budokan performs at well-represented NSW Open

Last weekend (20-22 August) 17 Budokan athletes represented the club (and NSW) at the 2010 NSW International Open. Many countries that competed in the Oceania Championships on the previous weekend in Canberra also participated in the NSW Open, such as NZ, New Caledonia, Solomon Is, Samoa, PNG, as well as all States and Territories in Australia. Participation in all respects from our athletes and in terms of volunteer and officials support was really fantastic. Budokan athletes achieved the following results:

4 x Gold Medals, 7 Silver Medals , 4 Bronze Medals, and 4 x 5th places

17 of our athletes competed in 22 divisions with Individual results as follows:

For the most part, the event ran really well - the venue was terrific and the Rules Seminar on Friday night which was attended by Kerrye and Rob, was also well worthwhile. NSW (and the National body) still has a bit to go to run the competition without hitches but there is already follow-up discussion on how to improve the overall event and that is really encouraging.

Congratulations to all medallists and our message to those who didn't medal (and this also applies to the medallists)is the same as it was for the OJU Championships as it is for every competition: Time and dedication are the only things required to move to the next level and we have no doubt that you all will do exactly that.

Some notable achievements:
  • 4 athletes competed in 2 or more divisions: Vanessa Hall, Jake Young and Shaun McDougall in Junior Men/Women and Senior Men/Women, and Nathan Katz in Cadets, Junior Men and Senior Men
  • Lachlan Brothers competed in his first major Open and in the process gained a win and competed for a Bronze medal
  • Josh Katz, Cameron Leishman, and Kiernan Tafft established their positions in their new Junior Weight categories with Gold, Silver, and a match for Bronze Medal respectively
  • Nathan Katz and Jake Young established their positions in their new Cadet/Junior Men and Senior Men Weight Categories with an array of Gold and Silver medals between them.
  • Nathan was awarded the "Rising Star" award for Cadets who competed in Junior Men/Women and medalled in both. There were 3 nominations. He also commenced his campaign in the Senior Men age category at this event, and fought well in a difficult draw with future medals just a matter of time.
  • Vanessa Hall achieved her personal best result in Junior and Senior Women categories in an Open event, with a Gold Medal in Junior Women and a Silver in Senior Women. This places her on the National Senior points table.
  • Shaun McDougall achieved his personal best result in the Senior Men category in an Open event, with 2 wins and a match for Bronze Medal. This also places him on the National Senior points table.
Budokan also provided a vast number of officials/volunteers for this event and we owe them a great deal of thanks:
Kerrye (Sports Commission), Patrick Waite and Kirsten McDougall (Tournament Management Committee), and competition volunteers Donna Young, Melissa Rudgley, Karen Leake, Sue Leishman, Alexandra Waite, and Liam Waite.

Thanks also to the clubbies who manned the video camera: Marcel and Naomi de Bruine, Greg Tafft, Josh Katz, and others who we may not know about. Thanks also to the wonderful club support from the families who really give the competition and especially our athletes a huge lift. You are always enthusiastic, supportive and positive and we thank you for being there! Congratulations to all the Budokanis who competed and in doing so, did them, the club, and NSW proud through your participation and achievements.

Budokan talent and support at Oceania Judo Championships

On 13th to 15th August 2010, six Budokan athletes represented Australia at the 2010 Oceania Continental Union Judo Championships in Canberra. For competitors in the Senior category, it represented a significant opportunity to acquire valuable 2012 Olympic Games qualification points. For the Cadets and Junior Men/Women, it provided an opportunity to establish their credentials in our continental union for future international representation. Performances from our club's National Team representatives was really fantastic with the following results:

1 x Gold Medal and 3 Silver Medals

Individual results were:

Nathan Katz (Cadets U/55kg) Gold Medal
Jessica Klajman (Cadets U/70kg ) No Division Contested (Accepted an offer to compete in Junior Women)
Hamish McDougall (Cadets U/73kg) Unplaced
Vanessa Hall (Junior Women U/57kg) Silver Medal
Jessica Klajman (Junior Women U/70kg) Unplaced
Nathan Katz (Junior Men U/55kg) Silver Medal
Jake Young (Junior Men U/60kg) Silver medal
Shaun McDougall (Junior Men U/90kg) Unplaced
Patrick Waite (Senior Men U/81kg) First Reserve - did not compete

The event ran really well although for the major event in the OJU, the selection of venue was disappointing. The President of the IJF Marius Vizer, attended the OJU Congress which preceded the competition and also the first day of competition (Cadets and Junior Men and Women) and commented that the Judo talent in the OJU region shows great potential. Participating countries included: Australia, New Zealand, French Polynesia, Samoa, Marianas (Guam), Vanuatu, American Samoa, PNG, Tonga, Fiji and New Caledonia.

In addition to the 5 families of the above competing Budokan athletes attending the event, it was really terrific that 4 other families of club members stayed with us at the Novotel (our new preferred accommodation of choice in Canberra) and helped in true Budokan spirit to lift the athletes on their competition day. Thanks so much to the Leishmans, de Bruines, Edwards, and McIndoes.

Congratulations to medallists Vanessa, Nathan, and Jake. To Jessica, Hamish and Shaun who didn't medal (and this also applies to the medallists), you have represented Australia and have proven your ability to get to that level. Time and dedication are the only things required to move to the next level and we have no doubt that you all will do exactly that. In particular, it was great to see Shaun McDougall, currently preparing for the HSC able to compete, demonstrating a fine example of study / sport balance, and Jess taking up the option to play Junior Women because of the lack of competitors in her Cadet division.

It is also noteworthy that the 3 Budokan athletes, Nathan, Jake, and Shaun selected to compete at the Junior World Championships in Morocco Africa later this year, have elected not to compete at that event. As previously mentioned, all are ranked #2 and therefore unfunded despite the OJU result. In the case of Shaun, the HSC takes precedence. In the case of Nathan and Jake, both believe that they will be more competitive next year and aim for that level of representation in 2011. Congratulations on your maturity in making this difficult decision. We look forward to supporting your achievement of your next goals. We will continue to fundraise in anticipation of a number of athletes likely to be selected for international events next year.

MONster success at 2010 tournament!

On the 8th August 2010, Budokan Judo Club hosted its 9th annual MONSter (U/10s) competition staged since the JFA introduced them in 2002. Budokan is one of only 2 clubs in NSW who have maintained the tradition of hosting the State-wide event on behalf of the JFA(NSW). This year we included for the first time a club-hosted NSW U/14s age competition which, like the U/10s, also had a provision for novice (yellow belt) divisions. This makes such an event a real education for less experienced Judoka and introduces the formalities and pressure of a competition in a very friendly environment.

Despite the increase in numbers in U/10s from last year and the addition of the 14s category, the event ran like clockwork, thanks to the club’s many enthusiastic volunteers and helpers and the NSW referees, who officiated the matches. Thanks to the referees who officiated: John Da Silva, Ernie Wakamatsu, Rodney Moulder, John Panopoulos, and Karen Da Silva for a job well done.

As has been the case since 2008, we had state-of-the-art technology with the JFA(NSW)’s electronic scoring and timing system and the large flat-screen monitor. Thanks to the JFA for the loan of the screen and laptop. Thanks so much to the many Budokanis who donated items for the hampers, who assisted with the securing of sponsors, who took the time out to help on Saturday to prepare for the event, and who helped run the event so smoothly on Sunday and then stayed back to pack and clean up.

Thanks to Castle Trophies who once again gave us a very good price on the quality trophies, to Joseph’s Selective Meats at Kellyville for heavily discounting the sausages and bacon for the BBQ, to Nestle for sponsoring hampers for the raffle and Sue Leishman for arranging this, and to Kathy Dundas for donating the hamper of Avon products.

Those who attended the event last year might recall that the number of participants for the MONSters was at an all-time low with only 28 compared to 48 in 2008 and 36 in 2007. Happily, this year we had 44 participants in the MONSter competition and 43 in the U/14s competition. Whereas last year 11 clubs participated, this year 13 clubs participated in the MONSters and the U/14s. There were some great matches and even some going to golden score, with all athletes putting on a great spectacle of technique and spirit. We received many positive comments from visiting parents and coaches during and after the competition which is again very encouraging and motivating.

The 13 clubs represented and numbers participating were: Budokan (16 MONSters compared to 13 last year, and 18 U/14s for a total of 34 participants), Blacktown City and Blacktown PCYC (10, a large increase compared to last year), new country club Yuukan (7, which is fantastic for a developing club), Penrith PCYC (5 compared to 2 last year), Zen Bu (4 compared to 1 last year); Illawarra, Campbelltown and Uni NSW (each with 3, none of whom participated last year),  Kido (2 compared to 1 last year), Sutherland and Willoughby (each with 2, neither participating last year), and Woy Woy and Bushido (each with 1, compared to 1 and 2 respectively last year.

There were 15 contested divisions in the MONSters age category and only 3 uncontested divisions with 68 matches compared to 50 last year. Of the 15 divisions, 4 were special combined divisions to create as many matches as we could generate. Budokan’s 16 MONSters did particularly well winning 7 divisions, coming second in 7 divisions and third in 2 divisions as well as winning three of the special awards as voted by the referees and club officials.

In the U/14s age category, we also had 15 contested divisions (2 being special combined) and only 1 uncontested division with 73 matches. Budokan’s 18 athletes also did particularly well winning 11 divisions, coming second in 5 divisions and third in 5 divisions as well as winning three of the special awards as voted by the referees and club officials.

Each year, we tell everyone that staging this event is no mean feat by any organisational standards. This year it was a bigger challenge; with the much larger numbers of athletes participating, we could only guess the numbers, divisions, trophies and how best to stage the extra age category. To stage the event so well this year taking every opportunity to make it a real spectacle and experience for our MONSters and the U/14s and their supporters is really gratifying for us as well as for all the participating athletes and spectators.

The support shown by our Budokan helpers, from the committee, parents and siblings of our MONSters and 14s, to our older Juniors and our Seniors, and from parents and siblings of non-competing athletes, again showed the spirit that is true “BUDOKAN”.

With the fantastic response this year in terms of participating clubs and numbers, including a number of new clubs, the event was a huge success regarding the cross-section of clubs, the enjoyment and enthusiasm of the athletes and spectators, and of course the valuable exposure and profiling of the club in the local area and to the Judo community.

There are many people who did many jobs and at the risk of leaving people out, we should at least attempt to list as many as we can because you all deserve a big congratulations and

"!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

National Team Selection: OJU Championships (13-15 August)

We previously congratulated Nathan Katz (Cadets and Junior Men), Jake Young (Junior Men), Vanessa Hall (Junior Women), Shaun McDougall (Junior Men), Jessica Klajman (Cadets), and Hamish McDougall (Cadets) on their selection to the OJU Championships (13-15 August), and also Patrick Waite (Seniors) on being selected first Reserve. All have been preparing well with regular training at Budokan and extra training at other clubs, in particular State sessions alternating between Budokan and Uni NSW on Saturdays, and Uni NSW on Friday nights.

Nathan is now on Day 5 of the 8 day National Training Camp at the AIS. Sessions have been loaded with randori (up to 12 x 6 minutes) and he is coping well. A number of families have decided to join us in Canberra which should really make our guys feel at home and encourage them in the true Budokan spirit.

To our representatives - the competition will be upon us in just a few days and the club wishes you all a fantastic event where you showcase your abilities to your maximum potential. Enjoy the experience and fight with confidence and determination.  We'll be with you all the way!

Budokan athletes selected for Junior World Championships 2010

For the first time in the club's history, we have 3 athletes selected for the one Junior (U/20) World Championship competition: Nathan Katz (U/55kg), Jake Young (U/60kg) and Shaun McDougall (U/90kg). Congratulations!! That is just fantastic!!

Shaun previously represented Australia at the 2009 Junior Worlds in Paris. This is a wonderful achievement for these 3 athletes and for the club and adds to the momentum of our 6 athletes (these 3 athletes plus Vanessa Hall, Hamish McDougall and Jessica Klajman, with reserve Patrick Waite) selected to the upcoming Oceania Championships. All 3 athletes are ranked #2 in their respective divisions for the Junior Worlds so funding if any, will be very limited, and might depend on winning Oceania.

The athletes will need to decide in the next 2 weeks whether they will accept the invitation. The club will do what it can to seek funding and sponsorship opportunities.

Seniors Kyu Grades and Masters Competition - 11th July

Congratulations to the following Budokan athletes who competed in the Senior Kyu Grades Championships on July 11:

Nik Zellner (2nd and 1st Kyu) U/80kg - 1st

Jarrad Cooper (2nd and 1st Kyu) U/90kg - 2nd

Shaun McDougall (2nd and 1st Kyu) U/90kg - 3rd

Training for the Oceania (OJU) Championship (Cadets and 14s)

Congratulations on the fantastic results from the 2010 Australian Titles.

The outstanding NSW achievements have resulted in many NSW athletes
being selected to represent Australia at the upcoming Oceania
Championships in August. The NSW State Coaches will be providing
additional squad sessions to assist selected athletes in their final
preparations for this event.

Sessions will be alternated between Budokan Judo Club and The University
of NSW (UNSW). The timetable is detailed below. There will be no cost
for Saturday sessions.

Timetable:
Saturday 17th July 3.30pm to 5pm Budokan Judo Club (Horticulture
Pavilion, Castle Hill Showground, Doran Drive, Castle Hill)
Saturday 24th July 2pm to 3.30 pm UNSW (First Floor UNSW Gym Cnr High St
and Anzac Pde, Kensington)
Saturday 31st July 3.30pm to 5pm Budokan Judo Club
Saturday 7th August 2pm to 3.30 pm UNSW

Eligible athletes are those who have been selected for Oceania. The
sessions are also open to non-Oceania athletes who were 2010 State Team
members in all Cadet Divisions and also heavier U14 year athletes.

Additionally for OJU/NSW Cadets, the Tuesday randori session at Zenbu
and the Friday randori session at UNSW has been designated an additional
training session.

There will be no mat fees applicable for OJU selected athletes at these
sessions. All other visitors will pay the standard mat fee.

If you have any queries regarding attendance please contact either
Kerrye Katz on 0416 235 816 or Phil Kearney on 0414 795 133.

New Dan (Black Belt) Grades in Budokan

Congratulations to Patrick Waite and Jake Young, this time for
successfully completing their Sho Dan (1st Dan Black Belt) examinations
at the recent NSW State Grading. Both athletes were well qualified with
almost double the required competition points, and notwithstanding the
short time to prepare since competing in the Nationals, this achievement
indicates a sound technical knowledge beyond their successful
competition skills.

McDougall (Junior Men), Jessica Klajman (Cadets), and Hamish McDougall
(Cadets) on your selection to the OJU Championships (13-15 August), to

Nathan on your selection to the 5-13 August National Training Camp.

Well done guys. This is the first time Australia will have a National
Cadet Team, and the first time that most of these athletes will compete
in an international event, providing a great opportunity for further
international representation.

Given that there is no "Squad" training for this, we will be doing a lot
of preparation for you at the club, and from next weekend (3.30-5.00pm 3
July), will use Sydney Uni on Saturdays again as an extra training
session. All Seniors / Cadets welcome. We are also discussing extra
"State Squad-like" sessions in conjunction with UNSW - See Kerrye or Rob

Budokan Judo Club had another outstanding National Championships this year. In time, we will put together a DVD of the event, as we have for the last 2 years. If anyone has photos of our guys in action please forward them to me. We will also arrange a photo session at the club for all participants.

Again, the club had a few new starters to the Nationals this year and a number playing in new age and weight categories, in particular due to the introduction of the new 14s and Cadet Categories. The results again show that there is significant depth and consistency in the club which is very motivating and humbling.

The results this year were outstanding with the club bringing home:

1st  x  5;  2nd x  3;   3rd x  7;   5th x  3;   7th x  3

Commentary and Interesting Statistics for 2010

  • 19 athletes (compared to 18 athletes in 2008 and 19 in 2009) competed in 24 divisions (23 in 2009)
  • 15 athletes won matches (compared to 14 athletes in 2008 and 13 in 2009)
  • 12 athletes won 14 medals (compared to 11 winning 13 medals in 2008 and 8 athletes winning 11 medals in 2009)
  • Of our 19 athletes, 17 competed in the 2009 Nationals and of these 11 medaled and  3 obtained a 5th place (ie competed for Bronze medal) this year
  • 5 sets of siblings competed (compared to 4 sets in 2008 and 6 in 2009): Lanes, Katz’s, McIndoes, Edwards, and McDougalls
  • 5 athletes (compared to 5 in 2008 and 7 in 2009) were selected to play in 2 age/open divisions each (this was affected by the new age categories and the restriction of 14s not being allowed to play in Cadets)
  • 5 athletes competed in 2 divisions with 2 athletes medaling in both (as for 2008 and 2009) (Nathan Katz – Gold in Cadets and Bronze in Junior Men; Patrick Waite – Bronze in both Men’s 81kg and Men’s Open, plus Jake Young – Bronze in Junior Men and 5th in Men; Vanessa Hall – Bronze in Junior Women and 9th in Senior Women; Shaun McDougall – Silver in Junior Men). Josh Katz and Cameron Leishman who medaled in both U/13s and U/16s in 2009 were unable to compete in Cadets this year in accordance with the new rules for U/14s.
  • 2 athletes competed in their first Nationals (and 2 more for Budokan for the first time), compared to 4 in 2008 and 6 in 2009 (Katelyn Boyd, Keirnan Tafft, and Amber and Kyle McIndoe)
  • Of these 4 athletes, 1 medaled (compared to 3 in 2008 and 2 in 2009) and 1 fought for Bronze (Keirnan Tafft - Bronze, Amber McIndoe – 5th)
  • 3 first time medalists at Nationals (compared to 5 in 2008 and 3 in 2009) – Jessica Klajman – Silver, improving on her 2009 5th place, Keirnan Tafft - Bronze, and Hamish McDougall - Bronze improving on his 2009 7th place
  • 1 athlete won a medal in his first Nationals Keirnan Tafft (Bronze), compared to 2 in 2009
  • 2008 U/13 Bronze medalist and unplaced in U/16s in 2009, Aidan Sandri won his first National Silver Medal
  • Jakob Edwards improved on his 2009 9th place competing for a Bronze, unfortunately against club-mate Hamish McDougall
  • Whilst Jessica Klajman was not awarded a Gold medal in Cadets U/70kg category because there were no other competitors, Budokan recognises her achievement and acknowledges her 1st place in that category. In competing in the next highest weight category, she did well to win a Silver Medal
  • 2009 U/13 medalists Kendall Lane (Silver) and Josh Katz (Bronze) competed in 14s and improved their placings, both winning Gold medals
  • Kendall Laneand Josh Katz won their first National Gold medals
  • Nathan Katz won his first Junior Men National Medal (Bronze) and has now won 4 National Gold medals and Naomi de Bruine has now won 2 National Gold medals.
  • Shaun McDougall, Silver medalist 2006 and 2009, and Gold medalist 2007, consolidated his 2009 Junior Men Silver Medal with another Silver this year
  • 2008 dual Bronze medalist in Junior & Senior Men, Jake Young improved on his 7th place in 2009 by winning a Bronze this year in Junior Men and unlucky not to medal in Senior Men
  • Vanessa Hall improved on her 5th place in Junior Women in 2009 with a Bronze this year and also competed in her first Senior Women’s Nationals putting up a great fight against the National Champion
  • With 3 Senior Men’s 5th placings behind him, Patrick Waite finally broke through the medal barrier for his first Senior Men’s Bronze medal in the largest category of the competition, Men’s 81kg with 26 competitors. He then went on to win a Bronze in the Men’s Open
  • Whilst there were no medals for Katelyn Boyd, Madison Lane, Amber and Kyle McIndoe, Conor and Jakob Edwards, and Cameron Leishman, numerous matches were fought and won, and their tenacity and efforts were commendable
  • Our athletes competed in 65 matches, winning 37 of them. Largest Division was Men’s 81kg (Patrick Waite) with 26 competitors. Most number of matches played in a single division was Boys 14s U/38kg (Josh Katz) with 5. Most number of matches played in 2 divisions was 6 (Nathan Katz, Jake Young and Patrick Waite)
  • Again, the ever competitive Dale Keogh competed in the National Kata event setting a fine example and showing her support of the competition. Her dominance in Kata continues with Silvers in both Katame-No-Kata (improving on her 2009 Bronze) and Ju-No-Kata
  • All our athletes prepared with dedication and maturity for this competition. Their commitment is unquestioned and whilst some may not have achieved the result that they desired this year, the experience of this Nationals will be of enormous benefit to all of them in subsequent competitions including next year’s Nationals in Perth
  • As always, we had an enormously strong support group of parents and club athletes. The spirit of Budokan was always strong, with many coming back to watch the Junior Men/Women and Seniors on Sunday, and then a large group attending Dreamworld and Whitewater World on Monday. Thanks to Donna for coordinating the accommodation and to Marcel de Bruine and Greg Tafft for taking on the videoing task over the weekend. Thanks to all parents and supporters for their positive spirit
  • In the 9 National Championships in which Budokan has been represented since 2002, 154 of our athletes have competed in 191 divisions and have achieved 117 medals:
    44 Gold, 22 Silver, and 51 Bronze medals, plus 29 x 5th, 21 x 7th, and 6 x 9th placings.

Club Rebuild 16th March

The "Dojo" rebuild last night went very well despite the extra 25% mat area and sub-floor to put down. We managed to achieve all objectives set albeit the unavoidable disruption to the process whilst the frame was configured and the outer sub-floor boards located.
Tasks included:

* Move the Horticulture stuff (tables, railings and trestles) back into the cattle shed - DONE
* replace the plastic floor seal at the Olympic flag end of the hall - DONE
* move all the filing cabinets, book case, trophy cabinet, change room, all equipment etc back into the hall - DONE
* rebuild the change room - DONE
* locate and lay the mat frame - DONE
* set the corner fixtures and the frame angles - DONE
* clean and lay the border sub-floor panels repairing any rubber cubes along the way - DONE
* fix the border panels to the frame - DONE
* clean and lay the other sub-floor panels repairing any rubber cubes along the way - DONE
* locate the wood-backed mats along the Olympic flag end of hall - DONE
* lay the mats per the predetermined pattern - DONE
* Sweep/vacuum the mats - DONE
* locate the mat cover - DONE
* replace the 4 picture / notice boards - DONE
* relocate the trophy cabinet - DONE
* Plus: Ceiling fans cleaned, Olympic Flag replaced, speakers relocated, TV/Stereo back in cabinet, books/DVDs/Videos replaced, trophies replaced, electronic timer replaced, dinosaur shelf and dino replaced.

The turnup was great and at the risk of leaving someone out (let me know if I do), the club owes a great deal of gratitude to a bunch of people who assisted. It's great that the club's athletes pulled together again and we had 13 in all with Peter and Kevin Schmitz, Jake Young, Patrick and Rory Waite, Bryan Medbury, Vanessa Hall, Michael Stubley and Shimin Ou, plus Cadets Nathan Katz and Jessica Klajman plus Juniors Josh Katz and Cameron Leishman plus committee members Don McDougall and Karen Leake, plus parents Richard Lane, Marcel de Bruine, Danny Klajman, Sue and Craig Leishman, plus Bill (Aikido) and 5 of his able team plus Simon from BJJ, plus Coaches Kerrye, Rob, and Guido, so with 31 all up, the majority were able to leave by 10.00pm as planned. Thanks so much to all of you for taking the time to support this (again) unpleasant but essential activity. It's really great to see the Dojo start to take life again. We'd like to see some U/10s parents help with these activities as well so we can get to know you better and see how hard you can work!

Cumberland Courier Newspapers Junior Sports Star Awards

Over the last year, three of the club's athletes were nominated and achieved Sports Star of the Month in the Cumberland Newspapers quest for Sports Star of the Year: Cameron Leishman and Nathan and Josh Katz. Nathan has recently been advised that he has made the final cut and will attend a dinner at Olympic Park on Tuesday night with all other sport finalists. Having 3 Juniors achieve monthly Sports Star is a great tribute to them and the club. Congratulations guys and especially to Nathan for making the finals. Enjoy the evening which includes a pre-dinner "Meet Your Heros" function.

NTID Trial over 27-28 Feb 10

The following Budokan athletes trialed for selection to the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) sponsored National Talent Identification & Development (NTID) Squad over the weekend: Vanessa Hall, Jake Young and Nathan Katz. Naomi de Bruine also attended on Saturday to participate in the testing. Congratulations to these fine young athletes for putting in a big effort through a number of gruelling tests covering fitness, agility, speed and technical capacity. Similar tests are being carried out by the NTID Coordinator around Australia and a small group of about 30 will be invited to a week-long camp at the AIS in Canberra during the next school holidays. The next intake of NTID Squad athletes (about 20) will be determined from this camp. We wish you well in your endeavour guys - good luck for your selection.

Club Pack-Up - 27 Feb 10

 (Main pack-up 6.30pm 4th March)

The preliminary work for the mat / club pack up on Saturday went extremely well. At the last minute Sean was able to get a large flat-bed truck and driver from work. This meant that we were able to transport all the crash mats, wood-backed mats, chairs, podium, carpet, spare kitchen cupboard, etc to Kennards storage in one load.

Unfortunately Council had not come back to us in time with a response to our proposal to buy a shipping container and locate it in the Showground so we used Kennards storage. I found out today that there is still potential that Council may allow this but obviously it's too late for this year.

Regarding the rest of the move-out, all that remains in the club will be moved into the workshop adjacent to the club on Thursday night. It's only when you see the dojo as a bare shell that you appreciate how good it looks when all the posters, flags, carpets, bookshelves, trophies, chairs, etc are in place.

Saturday's preparation for Thursday's main pack-up will ensure that the main pack-up goes smoothly. The following people attended Saturday's pre-move and we appreciate their time and effort to make it go so smoothly: Sean Brothers and Mal (his able driver who worked very hard himself), Don McDougall, Ante Jaksic, Jarrad Cooper, Patrick Waite and Rob K. Thanks so much guys. Training per normal Tuesday and Wednesday (U/10s) this week and Thursday 6.30 will be the pack up. Please be there.

Jake the Hickey farewell training 25th Feb

Well it seems that the time has come for Jake the Hickey to depart on his mission of good-will and adventure into the land of the high cold mountains and very fit natives who carry houses on their backs for veritable kilometres through the thinnest of air and over treacherously steep and jagged mountains camouflaged with semi-frozen rivers .......

His aim (you might well ask)? To bring a Hickey smile to those who have the pleasure of encountering his generous soul, and of course to start "Budokan Katmandu" and give new meaning to "Judo attitude with altitude"

Jake the Hickey's last session for some months will be tomorrow night (25th Feb) and I think this is deserving of some light refreshments after what will have to be a significantly gruelling session so that the memories lay strong in his mind for the duration of the adventure.

Make the effort. Train hard. BYO lemonade! Just be there! JUstDOit!!

State Titles 6-7 March

Third State Team Selection Event for 14s, Cadets, Jnr and Snr Men / Women)

Please read carefully. This competition format is quite different for NSW State competitions with the new age categories introduced, all categories played over two days of the same weekend, 14s and Cadets weighing Saturday and only 14s playing Saturday, Junior and Senior Men / Women weighing in and playing Sunday with Cadets. We have queried a number of issues with the Board of Management and a new info sheet could still be released. Main points to note:

* "Cadets entering the junior men or junior women divisions must be minimum 2nd kyu or above and wear appropriate belt". Eventually the National body may change the grading system to align with the new age categories and the current grade conversion system might disappear. Until then, minimum grade for Jnr and Snr Men / Women at NSW events is Senior Orange belt but only Cadets can compete in these divisions. Therefore Cadets who are minimum Blue belt may play up in higher age categories. Athletes eligible for the 14s category cannot play Cadets or Jnr or Snr Men / Women even if they are Blue belt.

* Cadets who intend to compete in Junior Men / Women and / or Senior categories do not need to reweigh for these age categories on Sunday morning as they will actually be competing at that time in their own Cadet category. This also means that confirmation of their entry needs to occur on Saturday when they weigh-in for Cadets.

* Note that there is no competition for Cadets on Saturday - Weigh-ins for Cadets is held on Saturday to allow the Draw to be completed and make an early start to the comp Sunday. Volunteers and referees will be critical then.

Sydney Open (Juniors U/13 & U/16) Results - 21 Feb 2010

Well done to the Budokan Juniors who competed in the second State Team Selection competition yesterday in very warm conditions at the Judo 'igloo' at Olympic Park. This was the last competition encompassing the now outdated age categories (U/13s and U/16s). With Maddison Lane ill and Kyle McIndoe and Naomi de Bruine injured, our numbers participating were 13 athletes playing in 16 divisions. Our juniors played very well to win 5 divisions, place 2nd in 5 divisions, and receive another 6 minor placings. This level of participation is really fantastic. Individual results follow:

ACT Open Results - 13-14 Feb 2010

With Ashley de Bruine withdrawing injured, Michael Stubley withdrawing ill, and Nathan getting a last-minute medical clearance to compete, we ended up with 19 of the club's finest competing in 22 divisions. This event is the first of the biggies for 2010 with National Senior Team points up for grabs as well as selection points for Cadets and Junior and Senior Men / Women for Oceania Championships. As usual the club's supporting machine was in fine form with Kerrye, Dale and Rob providing strong coaching support and of course our unique and highly identifiable spectator presence. The Novotel was a hit for about 10 families complete with indoor pool, spa, gym and sauna and made a nice change to the Sundowner, especially with the awful weather in Canberra.

There were the usual dramas with making weight, and the new age categories made for some interesting observations with 15 and 16 year olds getting used to applying and defending against strangles, and also with 15 year olds playing junior men and women and getting used to arm-locks. The referees were somewhat inconsistent with the new leg grabbing rules but generally very tough leaving little room for discretion (and sometimes reality), a bit of a shame given this was the first big event where these rules were applied. The video replay was used a lot and slowed up progress. Refereeing is a hard job indeed and we need to encourage judokas retired from or not interested in competition, to become referees. Overall the competition ran like clockwork with congratulations to Judo ACT for another job well done. Our athletes put on a great show and did the club proud yet again with 4 x 1st places, 5 x 2nds and 8 x 3rds. Last year, albeit with one less age category available, the 17 athletes we had competing in the ACT Open won 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze medals, so we continue to improve our participation and depth of results. There is potential for as many as 6 of the club's athletes to represent Australia at international events this year…but there is still the QLD Open and the Nationals to go!

Saturday was a long day with trial weigh-ins for 14s at 8.00am and the last of the medals awarded at about 6.30pm. Sunday, with only the seniors and weigh-ins the night before, was somewhat faster with the last of the medals presented at about 3.00pm. The venue is cosy to say the least for a competition of that size and ACT may need to look at alternatives next year. There is also talk of weigh-ins Friday night so that the competition can get underway earlier in future. Special thanks to Marcel and Ashley de Bruine, Don and Hamish McDougall, and Josh Katz for manning the video, to Simmy and Danny for coming along on Sunday to support the seniors, and to the great group of Budokan families who continue to show a positive spirit in all circumstances and for looking after the coaches so that we can concentrate on the club's athletes. Finally, congratulations to our athletes for displaying great spirit and skill, and for taking up the challenge of climbing up one more rung on the ladder of experience and competition prowess.

Sydney Open (Junior and Senior Men and Women) – 7 February 2010

This is also the 2nd State Team Selection event for the 2010 Nationals for Junior and Senior Men and Women. You should compete in this event even if not intending to play in the Nationals.

Club Cleaning - 6 February 2010

A thorough scrubbing of the mats is essential at least once per year.  The effort needs 20 people for 3 hrs based on last year’s event. Committee members Sean Brothers and Don McDougall will be coordinating the next mat scrubbing for Saturday morning 6 February 2010. Time is set for 8.30am.  Bring towels, buckets, squeegee mops, scrubbing brushes (on broom handles). The club has a lot of this equipment but more is better (label your stuff).

Club  will provide pizzas.

BUDOKAN MONSter Competition 23rd August 2009

On the 23rd August, Budokan Judo Club hosted its eighth annual MONSter competition staged since the JFA introduced them in 2002. Budokan is one of only 2 clubs in NSW who have maintained the tradition of hosting the State-wide event on behalf of the JFA(NSW).

The event ran like clockwork, thanks to the club’s many enthusiastic volunteers and helpers. Introduced last year for the first time, we had a great visual success with the scoring and timing by using the JFA’s electronic system. Thanks to the JFA for the loan of the screen and laptop. Thanks to the many Budokanis who took the time out to help on Saturday to prepare for the event and on Sunday to help run it so smoothly and stay back to clean up.

Whilst last year the number of participants was up by nearly 40% with its 48 entries compared to 36 in 2007, for some reason this year despite much advertising, numbers were down to only 28. This represents the lowest number attending since 2002, the highest being 57 in 2004. 11 clubs participated this year compared to 10 clubs last year, yet they all put on a great spectacle of technique and spirit. All comments received during and after the competition were enthusiastic and positive.

The 11 clubs represented and numbers participating were: Budokan (13 compared to 23 last year), Blacktown City (3 compared to 5 last year), Blacktown PCYC (3, same number as last year), Penrith PCYC (2 compared to 1 last year), Zen Bu (1 compared to 3 last year); Bushido Shoalhaven (1 compared 2 last year), Kido (1, same as last year), with 1 from each of the following clubs who didn’t participate last year: Woy Woy, Collegians, Kugatsu and Illawarra.

23 divisions were contested compared to 21 last year, 7 being uncontested. Of the 16 divisions, 8 were special combined divisions to create as many matches as we could generate. There were with 50 matches compared to 76 matches last year. Budokan’s 13 MONSters did particularly well winning 8 divisions, coming second in 9 divisions and third in 4 divisions as well as winning three of the special awards as voted by the participating clubs’ coaches. Congratulations to all especially those MONSters who participated in competition for the first time. Results for this year’s competition follow:

The staging of this event is no mean feat by any organisational standards, and to do it so well taking every opportunity to make it a real spectacle and experience for our MONSters and their supporters is really gratifying for us as well as for the MONSters themselves.
The support shown by our Budokan helpers, from the parents of our MONSters, to our older Juniors, our Seniors, to parents of non-MONSter members, again showed the spirit that is “BUDOKAN”.

Despite the low numbers participating, the event was a huge success regarding the cross-section of participating clubs and the enjoyment and enthusiasm of the athletes and spectators. It is encouraging that there were 4 new clubs participating and we will review the timing and format of this event to try and pick up the numbers in future.

There are too many people who did too many jobs to mention in detail. You know who you are.
"!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

For the first time, we are planning an U/13s event later in the year, so we’ll try to make that one special for our many Yonen (U/13s) athletes.

Congratulations on a job well done to all the MONSters and clubs who participated, and to all the supporters and helpers of the event.

Congratulations! A New Member

Congratulations to Andras and Fran Koltai on the recent birth of baby girl Maya, a new addition to the Koltai family and to the U/10s Wednesday night session in 5 years time.

Vounteers needed for NSW International Open

To: NSW Judo Clubs

The NSW International Open is being conducted on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September at the Bankstown Velodrome. To successfully run this tournament we need the support of volunteers from the clubs - without the officials we cannot run a tournament. I am writing to urge you to encourage your members to volunteer for the NSW Open.

We need helpers to lay mats at the venue on Friday night, starting at

10.30pm (cycling competitions take place till then) and to pull up the mats on Sunday afternoon, after the competition. It would be good if one club could volunteer for Friday night and one club for Sunday.

We also need about 20 volunteers on Saturday and 20 on Sunday to help with weigh-ins, collecting entry money, tableworkers (scoring and timing) and fight progression.

Volunteer co-ordinator Patrick Waite will be emailing his database next week with all the details. Patrick is also planning to run  a training day in early September for anyone who would like to learn fight progression or scoring and timing.

If you would like more information email Patrick at fwaite6@hotmail.com or phone 0402 216 097.

Please treat this matter urgently and advise Patrick of how many club members you can make available to support the NSW Open.

Thanking you in advance for your support.

MONSter Competition

Setup on Saturday is at 3.00pm. Older Juniors, Seniors and parents to assist wherever possible on Saturday but in particular on Sunday - a great way to learn how to run a competition and contribute to your club. Instructions for Front Door Entry Control, Weigh-Ins, and Scoring/Timing are attached. Hard-copies will be available Thursday night, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

A Committee meeting held a couple of weeks ago recommended Dana and Donna for Front Door Entry control, Vanessa/Ashley/Jessica to control Girls Weigh-In, Jake Y/Aidan for Boys Weigh-In, Naomi, Josh, Cameron, Kendall, Madison and other older Juniors and seniors for Scoring/Timing, Don McD with Jakob and Conor for Athlete Call-To-Mat; Greg Tafft/Kevin Schmitz and any other available seniors and parents for BBQ,  U/10s parents to assist in the kitchen for food/drink sales, all athletes who competed at the Nationals or have represented Australia this year to act as trophy presenters. Committee Members have roles on the day. Come and help showcase Budokan to the rest of NSW by supporting the Budokan-hosted MONSters competition!

Shaun's result at Junior Pac Rim

Congratulations to Shaun McDougall on achieving a Bronze Medal at the Junior Pacific Rim in Taipei on the weekend.

NSW International Open 2009

Entries close at the JFA Office on 28 August. The club will accept entries until next Tuesday 25 August, after which athletes will be responsible for their own registration.

State Junior & Senior Teams Tournament 2009 Results

The U/13s divisions were introduced this year. Unfortunately, our boys’ team had only one match against a composite team from Zen Bu and Illawarra whom our boys defeated 2:1 for 1st place. Our two U/13s girls’ teams were in a similar boat with only one other team from Blacktown PCYC participating. Both our girls’ teams defeated Blacktown and our A team defeated our B team 2:1 for 1st and 2nd place. Well done to our very talented U/13s teams: Josh, Cameron, Adam, Kendall, Amber, Madison, Tara, Conor and Kyle.

The competition in the U/16s divisions was also quite poor with our girls’ team (Naomi and Amber) winning the category uncontested. Our boys’ team was a bit underweight in the allocated divisions (with Hamish out with a gastro bug) and lost to UNSW after a draw and a subsequent rematch, and then we lost to the solid Woy Woy team for 3rd place. Commendable efforts to Aidan, Jakob and Nathan in having to compete outside their weight categories.

Our Men’s B team was short by 2 players, so we had to give away 2 byes in each round. With Shimin courageously battling a knee injury, the handicap was too great and we came in 3rd to UNSW and Sydney Uni. Well done to Kevin Schmitz for entering his first men’s competition, to Jake Hickey for fronting up after a late shift at work, and to Shimin for turning up so that the others could play and so we could enter a team.

Our Men’s A team was also not at its strongest with Guido out injured, Shaun out with a gastro bug, and Partick returning from Melbourne at 3am after a 21st party. Our men’s teams are historically on the lighter weight side but we love the challenge. In the two pools of three teams, we were pitted against UNSW and the very strong Zen Bu A team. In a very closely contested match, with 2 wins, 2 losses and a draw against UNSW, on a count back of points we lost 20 to 17. Against Zen Bu, we lost 4:0 plus a draw. Highlights were Jarrad scoring on Patryk Kelly, Patrick scoring against Morgan, Andras’ Uchi-Mata on the bigger UNSW 1st Kyu and Emilio’s very tactical matches against Kim and the Brazilian 1st Kyu, both for draws. Well done also to Jake Hickey for backing up during the Men’s B to make up the A team.

Our Women’s A team was also short one player giving away a bye to UNSW. Simmy had a close match with former Olympian Sonya Chervonsky for a draw, and Ashley played well in Tachi-Waza against National Champion Gemma Chadwick and then got caught with a strangle on the transition to ground work. Well done to the girls on 2nd place.

The Women’s Masters team continued their tradition of winning uncontested. In the Men’s Masters, we were up against a composite UNSW and Sydney Uni team. With 1 win up and 1 down, Emilio’s draw against Doyle resulted in a rematch, which he won right on the buzzer. Well done to the masters men on a good win. Congratulations to Bryan Medbury and Peter Zellner for supporting the event, and allowing the club to enter a team.

In all, Budokan’s 10 participating teams well surpassed the number of teams entered by any other club. Furthermore, of the 10 available categories available on the day, Budokan entered teams in 9 of them winning 5, coming 2nd in two, and 3rd in two more.

It is a shame that many clubs choose not to embrace the spirit that provides so much value to club sport at such events. That said, Budokan will continue the tradition of placing a lot of importance in team events, making up as many teams as possible even if they are short a player (or 3) rather than forming composite teams.

We all warmed up together, juniors and seniors, and each team got behind our other teams. There was a lot of club spirit shown at this event and athletes had to dig deep through injuries, the flu, working or partying late the night before, and of course mismatches of weight and grade. Well done to those who came and played only one match and those who came and didn’t get to fight at all – in the end it’s about supporting the club and the sport, and we certainly did that. Budokan athletes continue to impress with their enthusiasm and club spirit and the club continues to develop and grow.

Results - Kyu Grades and Masters Competition - 12th July

Seven Budokan seniors participated in the JFA(NSW) Kyu grades and Masters Competition nearly two weeks ago resulting in 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals and a bronze medal. The primary purpose of this competition is to match similar graded judoka in general weight groups and provide an opportunity for accumulating points for their next grading. Our 7 guys had 27 fights and won over 140 competition points towards their next grading. It is important for all athletes to keep a record of competitions with the name and grade of the opponent and the winning score. In summary:

  • Newly graded Orange Belt Andre D'Souza had it tough in his very first competition, and in the 70kg (Orange/Green) division fought two bigger green belts who were too experienced but he learned a lot from his experience.
  • Jake Young only had one fight in the Blue and Brown belt lightweight category which he won with a nice Ippon from Osoto Gari
  • Jake Hickey and Shimin Ou (who was just graded to Green Belt), both won their pool of 4 in the same division (Orange and Green Belts U/90kg). Both won their 3 matches with convincing Ippons, and got good practice with Shime Waza (strangles) being the method of winning for 3 of their 6 matches.  Then in the final pool, Jake lost one of his two matches walking onto a Seoi Nage, but beat Shimin in the other match with Kouchi Gari. Unfortunately Shimin lost both his final pool matches, one to Jake, and the other from a Harai Goshi which he also walked onto directly from a grip. So Jake came 2nd and Shimin 4tha great effort by both guys who attacked well and followed up vigorously in Ne Waza.
  • Jarrad Cooper was on fire and in his first match threw Shaun McDougall for Ippon with a Seoi Nage in the Mens Blue and Brown Belt 100kg division. He won his next match with Juji Gatame (arm lock) and then lost to his very tall opponent with a Tani Otoshi switch. In his final match against another very tall opponent (brother of previous opponent), he played aggressively scoring a Yuko from Kaeshi Waza (counter technique) and then following up with Osae Komi (hold down) for Ippon. He ended up winning the division on points.
  • Shaun has had many better competitions and after losing to Jarrad, absolutely dropped a very tall Brown belt with a great drop Seoi nage for Ippon. Whilst this should have given him confidence, he did not regain his aggressive composure and lost his last two matches being unplaced on the day.
  • Bryan Medbury played in the Men's Masters Age Division winning his two matches by Ippon with Osae Komi and Tai Otoshi respectively. In the Open Masters, he won 3 of his 4 matches, two by Ippon with strong Tai Otoshis and one by Osae Komi. A great day overall for Bryan winning 5 of 6 matches, all by Ippon and gaining a Gold and Silver medal!
So in all a very good day for our athletes and the club.

World University Games

Wishing Jennifer Purcell a great competition in Serbia and a succesful overseas trip leaving this weekend to represent Australian Universities.

Junior Pacific Rim (U/20s)

Congratulations to Shaun McDougall who has been selected to compete in the Junior Pacific Rim competition in Taiwan 14-16 August and provisionally selected for the Junior World Championships in Greece 20-25 October as well as the AIS Camp 26 July - 2 August. The JFA Inc will fund him about 70% of the costs required for Pac Rim. Congratulations to Kevin Da Silva who has been selected as reserve athlete to these competitions.

National Talent Idenification & Development Squad (NTID)

Congratulations to Kevin Da Silva who has been selected to the 2009/10 intake of the 20 strong NTID Squad. He was ranked #1 against the selection criteria. Congratulations to Shaun McDougall who has been selected as a reserve athlete to the 2009/10 NTID Squad. Kevin is the third Budokan athlete to have been selected on the NTID since the squad was established. Previous selected athletes are Nik Zellner and Jake Young.

As you all know, Jake Young left for Japan on Wednesday as part of the 2008/2009 NTID Squad activities. I received a text message last night indicating that their first session was Ok and he coped well with the Japanese training.

Australian Judo Nationals 2009 results

Budokan Judo Club had another outstanding National Championships last weekend. Results and comments are below. In time, we will collate more details on individual performances and put together a DVD of the event, as we did last year. If anyone has photos of our guys in action please forward them to me. We will have a photo session at the club soon for all participants.

The club had a few new starters to the Nationals this year and a number playing in new age and weight categories. The junior categories are very dynamic and every year many athletes have to cope with the adjustment to their new weight and age categories. As far as Kerrye and I are concerned, some of the Silver medals could easily have been Gold, but the results again show that there is significant depth and consistency in the club which is very motivating and humbling.

Commentary

  • 19 athletes (compared to 18 athletes in 2008) competed in 23 divisions

  • Kevin Da Silva consolidated his 2008 Junior Men's Bronze medal with another Bronze in Junior Men this year
  • Arguably, both the decision in Kendall Lane's final in Golden Score should have gone to her, and a lack of consistency regarding the leg grab rule in Josh Katz's second match in U/13 cost him a place in the final
  • Naomi de Bruine improved on her 2008 5th place in U/16 for a Bronze medal, and Jessica Klajman improved on her 2008 7th by fighting for Bronze, sadly against clubmate Naomi
  • Repeating his 2007 U/73kg performance of 3 wins and 2 losses, Patrick Waite only narrowly missed a Bronze medal in the 27 athlete strong U/81 men's division, for his third senior Men's 5th place
  • The elbow injury suffered by Jake Young, 2008 dual Bronze medallist (Junior & Senior Men) prior to QLD Open, cost him adequate preparation and a medal this year
  • This was the first competition that Simmy Waraich has played at her new weight of U/57kg. Both matches went to Golden Score so there is little doubt she will be amongst the medals in the future.
  • This was the first National competition in which Aidan Sandri and Karen Da Silva competed in the U/16s category, and for Hamish McDougall in the U/66kg division. Together with Madison Lane, and Conor and Jakob Edwards, whilst there were no medals, their tenacity and efforts were commendable.
  • Again, the ever competitive Dale competed in the National Kata event and showing her dominance in Kata, won a Silver in Ju-No-Kata and a Bronze in Katame-No-Kata
  • All our athletes prepared with dedication and maturity for this competition. Their commitment is unquestioned and whilst some may not have achieved the result that they desired this year, the experience of this Nationals will be of enormous benefit to all of them in subsequent competitions including next year's Nationals in Brisbane.
  • Congratulations to Patrick Waite Snr who won the JFA Inc. Volunteer of the year Award for NSW.
  • As always, we had an enormously strong support group of parents and club athletes. The spirit of Budokan was never stronger, an example being the whole club hanging around after Saturday's competition to watch Dale compete in the Kata events. There was an hour delay and the competition took 2 hours but we stayed to the end, along with a couple of Tasmanian supporters.
  • In the 8 National Championships in which Budokan has been represented since 2002, 135 of our athletes have competed in 166 divisions and achieved 102 medals: 39 Gold, 19 Silver, and 44 Bronze medals, plus 26 x 5th, 18 x 7th, and 5 x 9th placings.

Special Thanks

A special thanks to Donna for arranging the accommodation at the Sundowner where most of the club stayed, to Marcel for manning the DVD camera to capture the event, to Kirsten McDougall and Karen Leake for managing the NSW Team, to Dale for assisting Kerrye and I with coaching the club's athletes over the 3 days, to Kerrye for taking on the role as Junior Team Coach, to Andras and Jen for supporting the athletes over the weekend, and to all the parents for being so supportive and positive about their children and their performances.

Congratulations also to Patrick Waite Snr who won the JFA Inc Volunteer of the Year Award for NSW.

Nationals - Club Technical Session

The club's second technical session will be held on Sunday 24th May. It is being run primarily for Budokan Club athletes who have been training at the State Squad and who have nominated to compete at the Nationals.

The club's second technical session will be held on Sunday 24th May. It is being run primarily for Budokan Club athletes who have been training at the State Squad and who have nominated to compete at the Nationals.

The U/10 and U/13 JFA(NSW) competition is being held on the same day (per the note sent last week) and eligible Juniors have the choice to participate in either the competition or the technical session - please discuss with Kerrye. She will be in attendance at the competition.

The technical session will be a chance to consolidate those strategies which we focussed on in the first session, as well as a further opportunity to practice your specific techniques and strategies. There will be some revision of the posture, grip work and entries for techniques as well as combination and counter techniques. This is not an intensive squad session (ie no randori).

Session Details: Sunday 24th May 2009

Any doubts about completing the form, see Kerrye or Rob.

Form is attached below.

NTID top 30 for National Camp 14-20 April

The club previously congratulated Kevin Da Silva and Jake Young for being selected to the final 30 participants in the National NTID Selection Camp at AIS in April. Since then, Jake was injured at training and sadly has had to forfeit his position at the camp

and therefore also his position on the NTID Squad for 2008/09. We wish Jake a speedy recovery and hope that he will be well recovered for a strong effort at the Nationals. The only consolation is that the first reserve for the camp is also a Budokan member in Shaun McDougall. So now we wish both Shaun and Kevin well at the camp commencing tomorrow and a successful attempt at NTID selection

NTID Japan Camp

As part of his commitment to the NTID Squad in the last 12 months, Jake Young has been selected for an NTID camp in Japan from 25th June to 9th July. Congratulations Jake for selection to train in Japan and for your commitment to the NTID Squad over the past 12 months

Another Zenbu visit

The club has had a couple of good visits by Zen Bu in recent weeks. It's coming up to Easter and so with the last pre-Easter session being this Thursday 9th April, it would be nice to have a big Budokan seniors turnout for the Zen Bu visit. So come on seniors!

Great Budokan result QLD Open

This was a great preparation for those competing at the Nationals in June, with clubs from most Australian States as well as NZ and Hong Kong participating. Congratulations to all Budokan athletes who competed. Again, you did us proud putting in everything you had.
There was some tension regarding rule interpretation and the lack of penalties (for defensive play and grabbing trousers) to athletes competing against our guys which certainly cost us a couple of higher medals. The competition was run well with few delays.17 athletes played 24 divisions, Results attached.

Thank you to Marcel de Bruine for patiently videoing our guy's matches for us to review (and also to Don and Josh for Sunday afternoon's videoing). Thanks also to Anna Da Silva for arranging the accommodation and the dinner on Saturday night which is a great tension reliever. Thanks also to all the parents for their positive support during the competition which is always valued. Finally well done to all our athletes.

We wish you all well in the upcoming Nationals campaign.

Zenbu visit Thursday 26th

Zenbu will be dropping in to train this Thursday night. This is a great chance for everyone to train with a different range of partners, so take the opportunity to come and join in...

Volunteers for hall rebuild

All that remains for the hall rebuild is to bring back the remaining chairs, crash mats, podium, carpet, etc stored at Snoek's house on Sunday 29th at 9.00am. So far, we have Pete and Nik Zellner, Max Hale and Rob K. A couple more people would be really helpful so that we can also make a start on the posters and flags.

Hall rebuild completed

The investment we put in on Monday night really paid off and last night we rebuilt the mat area in the new location (ready for the extension), built the change room, relocated the book/video cabinet and the trophy cabinet and replaced their contents, relocated the filing cabinets, dinosaur, photo and notice boards, and some of the chairs. We are now ready to train.

A huge thanks go to the 30 strong Budokan, Aikido, and BJJ clubs' members who took about 3 hours to get everything done: Marcel, Ashley & Naomi de Bruine, Sean Brothers, Jake and Donna Young, Alex Snoek, Peter & Kevin Schmitz, Guido Scholtz , Richard Lane, John Da Silva, Dale Keogh, Simon & Jake Farnsworth (BJJ & Budokan), Peter Sardelich, Steve (BJJ), Brian Medbury, Jarrad Copper, Nathan Stephenson-Wong, Tony Cox (Aikido), Bill Haines (Aikido), Mike Tressler (BJJ), Blaise Tuma, and Maryam Nesvaderani, and Rob, Kerrye, Nathan & Josh Katz.

Nearly everything we wanted to do was completed by about 9pm. Guido and I left at 10pm and with Guido's famous last words which are repeated every year: "...only 365 days until we have to do this ... again". I always look forward to those words.

Training for Seniors at Zenbu

As there is no club training at Budokan this week, we have arranged a training session on Saturday 21st March for seniors (which includes competition players 14 years old Blue Belts and above) at ZenBu Judo Club as follows:

10.00am Terry Hills Dojo, 3 Myoora Place, Terry Hills (opposite the Bonsai place)

There is no cost to Budokan members. Please let Rob know if interested, so numbers and approx. age breakdown can be passed to Zen Bu.

In the future, we will arrange sessions from time to time at Sydney Uni (Saturday afternoon), UNSW (Saturday morning) and Zen Bu for extra training.

Club Dinner this Saturday

For those who may have missed receiving a note at the club over the last couple of weeks or an email from Donna Young, we are celebrating a belated Club Christmas in March. All are welcome!!

As previously advertised:

Blue Gum Hotel
55 Pacific Highway, Waitara
Time: from 6 pm
Cost: pay your own food & drink – NO COVER CHARGE – Children welcome

If you haven't already done so, please let Donna Young know if you are attending (just to get approx. numbers for the venue). At this stage 40 are confirmed. Given that we had 35 at the "Festival of Lifting the Mats", we are sure that more people will be interested. Her contact is:
dydonnamareeyoung@gmail.com

This is a great opportunity to "meet the whole gang" and get to know the club's members and parents across all 3 of the club's age groups from the Under 10s "MONSter sessions, to Juniors to Seniors. We look forward to seeing you there.

2nd State Team Selection

For details on the second state selection, please check the the Event calendar:, which contains info and a map of the location.

ACT Open 2009 results

Congratulations to all Budokan athletes who competed in the ACT International Open last weekend.

Overall our 17 athletes competed in 21 divisions with the following results:
1st x 4; 2nd x 3; 3rd x 4; 4th x 1; 5th x 4.

In summary, Budokan had a number of U/13 year old athletes playing U/16s as there was no lower age limit for this event. They played very well with some good wins. We also had a number of U/16 junior girls playing U/20 junior women also with some good wins there, and some junior men playing senior men gaining valuable experience and establishing their potential future for senior national team selection.

The ACT Open is also the first of 2 national team selection events for the Junior World Championships. We had a number of athletes who medalled in these divisions. If their performance is consistent at the National Championships in June, then they are in contention for selection to the Junior Worlds later this year.

This is very encouraging considering a number of our athletes competed for the first time in new weight and age divisions. The athletes gaining minor placings or being unplaced in no way reflects the great matches they played and the fighting spirit displayed. Sometimes it's the luck of the draw - in a large division, if you only just lose to someone who then loses his next match to (say) an Olympic representative, that can put you out of the opportunity to go into the repechage knock-out pool for a chance at a bronze medal.

Our coaching support was solid with Kerrye, Rob and Dale looking after our athletes on 2 mat areas and our club families were as always very encouraging and supportive. Saturday's performance was rewarded with over 20 pizzas and numerous beverages around the pool at our accommodation. Thanks to our athletes for giving 100%, Marcel and Naomi for manning the Camcorder, Donna for arranging the accommodation, and everyone for supporting a great show from our athletes!

NAME
DIVISION
RESULT
Comments
Karen DA SILVA
Girls (U/16) U57kg
2ND
One of Budokan’s U/13 athletes, Karen displayed great skill against the older Brown (NSW) by scoring Ippon with Tomoe Nage. In her final against Barks (SA), who is almost out of the U/16 division, she put up a good fight losing with Ippon Seoi Nage. Great fighting spirit!
Vanessa HALL
Girls (U/16) U/63kg
2ND
In a round robin of 3, Vanessa had to play club-mate Jessica in her first match. This was a good match with a Yuko going to both players. Vanessa eventually threw Jess with Seoi Nage for Ippon. A very close-fought and spirited match against Kelly (NT) saw a win to Kelly with the lowest margin of Yuko. A fine result.
Jessica KLAJMAN
Girls (U/16) U/63kg
3RD
With two Budokanis in the same round robin pool, Jess had to play Vanessa first and scored a nice Yuko from her favourite counter. Vanessa’s Seoi Nage attack was too strong to counter and Jess then had to fight Kelly (NT) in which she was held down. A good effort and another rung in the experience ladder of major competition.
Ashley de BRUINE
Girls (U/16) O/63kg
4TH
Ashley had a good win on Parrington (ACT) with a counter for Waza Ari but lost her other 3 matches although displayed tenacity and spirit. She would be disappointed with that given her better performance in Junior Women.
Josh KATZ
Boys (U/16) U/35kg
1ST
One of Budokan’s U/13 athletes, Josh had 4 matches against athletes from 4 different States, winning 3 by Ippon from Tai Otoshi, Ouchi Gari and Seoi Nage. He also achieved minor scores from Kouchi Gari/Makikomi including a Koka win in the last seconds of his match against P. Hill (ACT). A strong and consistent overall performance. Well done!
Conor EDWARDS
Boys (U/16) U/35kg
2ND
In the same division as Josh, Conor also played consistently well in his 4 matches winning 3 of his matches by Ippon (Ura Nage, Deashi counter, Osae Komi) and only losing to Josh. This was a very sound performance especially considering Conor is only just out of U/10s. Great work!
Cameron LEISHMAN
Boys (U/16) U/42kg
1ST
2 Ippon wins in 2 matches against athletes from NSW and ACT gave another of our U/13 athletes a very good win. Cameron used Ogoshi/Tai Otoshi and strong ground work to secure these wins and with every competition shows more confidence and ability. Good stuff!
Nathan KATZ
Boys (U/16) U/50kg
3RD
With an Ippon win against Emery (VIC) with Osoto Gari, Nathan faced his old adversary Riley (ACT). Whilst delivering some strong attacks, during an Ouchi/Kouchi combination, he was countered for Ippon. In the repechage, he won with convincing Ippon wins against his two opponents using Osoto and Seoi Nage. A very good come back!
Aidan SANDRI
Boys (U/16) U/55kg
5TH
Losing the main draw match against Langley (TAS) from Kouchi Gari, Aidan fought for Bronze in the repechage pool against Harrison, but unfortunately was countered from his Kouchi attack and then thrown with Deashi Harai. This division is very competitive and Aidan will improve with every competition behind him.  A good effort!
Jakob EDWARDS
Boys (U/16) U/60kg
UNPLACED
With Jakob thrown for Ippon by Crane (ACT), he needed Crane to win his next match for a chance in the repechage pool, but this was not to be and Jakob had to settle for one match at this competition. Another case of improving step-by-step with every competition experience behind him.  A good effort!
Hamish McDOUGALL
Boys (U/16) U66kg

UNPLACED
Hamish was thrown for Ippon by the strong Kearney (NSW) with Deashi Harai. Unfortunately he lost his second match against Rozic (SA).  Like Aidan and Jakob, Hamish has moved up a weight division and will settle into the new competition with each event. A good effort!
Vanessa HALL
Junior Women U/63kg
5TH
Backing up from Junior Girls, Ness had a good win on Everden-Kelly QLD) by Ippon with Ura Nage, and in a very controversial decision against which we protested, lost to a Spanish Dan grade by Sutemi Waza. Our belief is that Ness actually threw the Spaniard with a Gake. In the match for Bronze against Kelly (NT), despite her strong commitment to Osoto, she was countered.  An excellent effort for this (just) 15 year old.
Ashley de BRUINE
Junior Women U/70kg
3RD
Ashley also stepped up to Junior Women with another round robin pool of 5. With two losses against Collins (ACT) from Ouchi/Leg grab and Betts (NT) from Juji Gatame, she recovered well scoring 3 Yukos with Harai and counters and Ippon from Osae Komi on Hill (ACT) and securing the Bronze with Yuko (Harai) on McGorm (ACT). Great effort!
Kevin DA SILVA
Junior Men U/60kg
1ST
With good wins against Benstead (VIC) using Kouchi Makikomi for Yuko and Bradley (NSW) with Seoi Nage for Ippon, Kevin was matched in the final against McMahon (SA). This was a convincing match with Kevin dictating from the start. 2 Yuko scores from Kata Guruma were followed by a crashing Ippon with Seoi Nage. A comprehensive win!
Jake YOUNG
Junior Men U/60kg
5TH
Looking a little vulnerable standing, Jake secured a tight hold down for an Ippon win against Dickins (QLD). He controlled McMahon (SA) until a hesitation in attack resulted in McMahon getting his hip across for Ippon with Ogoshi. The match for Bronze with Benstead (VIC) went to golden score and a Seoi Nage to Benstead with a hamstring tear to Jake. Jake was disappointed with this performance and will resolve this ‘flat’ day next time.
Shaun McDOUGALL
Junior Men U/90kg
1ST
Played in a combined U/90 and U/100kg division and gained a silver medal with a huge counter to Ura Nage against the other 90kg player Aranda (ACT) and then putting up a good fight against the older and more experienced 100kg division Dan grade Dahl from QLD. Great spirit!
Jennifer PURCELL
Senior Women U/57kg
5TH
A closely fought match against McDade (QLD) resulted in a win to Jen. Against Dabner (TAS) she almost scored with Uchi Mata, but was ultimately countered and held down. In repechage against Stewart (VIC), another close match going into golden score resulted in a crashing Ippon to Jen from Uchi Mata. In the match for Bronze with Manuel (WA) she over-reached her grip and was thrown for Ippon with Seoi Nage. Not a bad day’s work!
Kevin DA SILVA
Senior Men U/60kg
3RD
Kevin backed up from Junior Men. Dickens did not want Kevin to settle and dealt out a barrage of attacks scoring Waza Aris from a leg grabs and Kata Guruma. In the Bronze medal match against Carapovic (SA) Kevin dominated with Seoi Nage for Waza Ari and Kata Guruma putting him on the senior national points map – well done!
Jake YOUNG
Senior Men U/60kg
WITHDREW INJURED
As noted in Junior Men, Jake withdrew form Men’s after injuring his hamstring.
Patrick WAITE
Senior Men U/81kg
UNPLACED
After a year’s break from competition, Patrick had a mighty battle against Kim (KOR), scoring Yuko from 2 Shidos by the Korean and almost scoring with strong drop Sode and Osoto Gari attacks. Kim pressured his grip to take Patrick with Sukui Nage for Waza Ari and Yuko with a leg grab. Unfortunately Kim did not fire against Olympic rep Anthony (VIC) putting Patrick out of the comp. A real shame but a great come-back for Patrick!
Shaun McDOUGALL
Senior Men U/90kg
7TH
Also backing up from Junior Men, Shaun played extremely well and stuck to good basic strategies against the experienced Hill (ACT). He was eventually thrown by a frustrated Hill with Osoto Gari. In repechage against Kwon (KOR), he evaded a barrage of attacks by Kwon and also gave some back but was eventually thrown with Osoto Gari. Tremendous spirit!
Jake HICKEY
Senior Men U/90kg
UNPLACED
Like Patrick, another hard draw for Jake in his first major senior competition. Against Gordon (NZ) he put in some good Harai and Osoto Gari attacks and kept good controlling grips. In one short instance of relaxing the grip, Gordon crashed in for Osoto Gari. Unfortunately, Gordon lost his next match putting Jake out, but great spirit shown!

Good luck pumpkin

Funny as it seems, judo club members and parents have interest OTHER than judo *shock-horror*

It seems that the Tuma's are trying to grow a large pumpkin. Since they are already adept at growing large boys (Joel and Blaise...) - we're sure growing giant vegetables should be a breeze...

WITH a few months left of growing, Beverley Tuma and her husband Antony are hoping for a miracle with their pumpkin seeds.

"The vine is only 3m long," the Box Hill woman said.

"We water it every day, but I think we're going to have to get some ferti¬liser. -
"That should spur it along."

The Great Backyard Pumpkin Challenge al¬lowed locals to grab their free seeds in an attempt to grow a giant pumpkin.

Successful pumpkin growers are in with a chance to have it exhibited at the 2009 Sydney Royal Easter Show.

There are prizes for giant pumpkin, best decorated, most unusual shape, celebrity lookalike pumpkin and smallest pumpkin.

Thank you so much for all those who took on the mat scrubbing challenge last Sunday. We had a very enthusiastic crowd of over 20 people including Sean and Dana Brothers, Mark Stewart, Donna Young, Brian Medbury, John and Aidan Sandri, Patrick Snr, Patrick Jnr and Rory Waite, John and Kevin Da Silva, Don, Shaun, and Hamish McDougall, Peter and Nik Zellner, Dale Keogh, Max Hale, Rob Katz, plus Bill Haines, Simon Farnsworth, Scott, and Akiko from Aikido and BJJ.

Thanks also to Sean and Don who organised the event. We learned some lessons for next time regarding sequence of cleaning, replacing the contents of buckets, and the number of post-scrubbing moppers, but overall we got a good result in only 2 hours. We have also decided to repeat the exercise after the Nationals in June/July and then again in Jan 2010 to keep the mats as clean as possible.

There is no easy way to clean the mats and the large turnout is really appreciated. Now we just jave to keep educating all athletes to wear sandals/thongs on leaving the mat for any reason, to have clean bare feet when walking onto the mat, and to wear clean washed Gis.

NSW Judo Team Selection Criteria for 2009 Nationals

This document describes both the expectation on athletes seeking to represent NSW at the 2009 National Judo titles and the process to be followed in the selection of teams to represent NSW at the annual JFA National Championships. It is applicable to all members of the JFA (NSW) Inc.

Overview
The details are below, but put simply there is an expectation that athletes seeking to represent NSW in 2009 will:

  • Medal in a minimum of 2 out of the 3 selection tournaments.
  • Participate in the Technical Skills Session.
  • Participate in the State Team Training Camp.
  • Attend a minimum of 75% of squad training sessions. (Or in the event of Country athletes, attend 75% of Saturday sessions)
  • Complete and forward the requested information and payments within the specified time frames.
  • NSW Team Coaches and Managers will coordinate the training programme, record athlete attendance and recommend athletes for inclusion on the team using the 2009 Selection Criteria.
  • In the case of exceptional circumstances, the onus is on the athlete to clearly document the circumstances in writing prior to commencement of squad training so that due consideration can be given to the situation.
  • Based on recommendations from the State Coaching Coordinator, the NSW BOM finalise the list of members of the State Team.

1.0 Selection Tournaments

  • An athlete will be eligible for selection by gaining 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in at least 2 of the 3 selections in the weight and age category chosen to participate in the Nationals.

Selection Tournament dates for 2009 are:

30th Nov 2008

15th Feb 2009
Sydney Open Championships
TBC
8th March 2009

  • The JFA Inc. Sporting Code will apply for all NSW selection events.

  •  The following Age Category restrictions will apply at all events:
    • Yonen competitors entering Shonen divisions must be 11 years old and 2nd Kyu on the day of the selection tournament. If successful in gaining state selection, they must be graded to 1st Kyu before participating in the Nationals and compete as a Shonen 3rd Kyu. (and therefore 12 years old).

Due to these younger players “growth spurts”, weight categories will be agreed through discussion with player, parent (or guardian) and the relevant state coach during their squad-training period

    • Shonen competitors entering Junior Men/Women or Senior Men/Women divisions must be minimum 14 years old and 2nd Kyu on the day of the tournament.

They may also be eligible for selection to the Junior Men/Women or the Senior Men/Women divisions only if they are graded to 1st Kyu (and therefore 15 years old), or Seinen (senior) 3rd Kyu (and therefore 16 years old), by the date of the Nationals. In these cases, athletes must compete in the divisions for which they are seeking selection.

  • Seeding of athletes at Selection Competitions will be the responsibility of the relevant coach or representative of the NSW Athlete Support Team for selection events.

  •  The Tournament Manager will oversee the process and arbitrate if necessary. If the relevant coach or representative of the NSW Athlete Support Team are not available then the Tournament Manager will take responsibility for this process.

2.0 Technical Skills Development Session
Attendance at this session is compulsory for all athletes intending to nominate for the NSW State Team. The structure of this session will be determined by the appointed State Coaches and will have a large component of competition skills development. Guest coaches may be asked to assist with these sessions.

Nomination forms, athlete agreement forms and other information will be distributed during this session.

Athlete, coach and manager photos will be taken during this session.

3.0 State Training Camp
Attendance at the training camp is compulsory for all athletes intending to nominate for the NSW State Team. The NSW Athlete Support Staff will co-ordinate the training timetable and activities for the 2009 NSW Training Camp.

Nomination forms and athlete agreement forms are to be returned during this weekend.

4.0 State Squad Sessions
  • State squad sessions commence on Monday 20 April 2009.
  • Squad sessions will run 3 times per week;
    • Please note, under 13 players will be required to attend at least one session per week at Junior Squad for the 7 week period leading up to the National Titles.
  • To be included on the final state team for the 2009 nationals, athletes must attend a minimum of 75% of squad training sessions.
    • The 75% is in addition to the Technical Skills Session and State Training Camp which are compulsory.
    • Athletes living in NSW, outside a 100km radius of the Sydney GPO, may negotiate with the Coaching Coordinator, a suitable athlete training program, but are expected at 75% of weekend squad training sessions.
  • State coaches will record athletes’ attendance at squad.
  • A medical certificate provided by a doctor, stating the athlete’s fitness for squad training, is to be submitted to the relevant state coach by the first state squad training session attended.
  • Club coaches are encouraged to attend sessions with their athletes and assist on the mat under the direction of the State Coaching Team. The State Coaching Team will be responsible for coaching NSW athletes at the National Championships.

  • Injuries
    • A doctor’s certificate must be provided in the event of an injury preventing full participation at state squad training sessions.
    • If an injury is substantiated, the expectation is that the athlete participates within the constraints of the injury.
    • If the state coach believes that further medical opinion is needed from the nominated medical personnel, then the player concerned shall attend at their own expense.
    • In case of injury, the attendance criteria must still be met.
  • Exceptional circumstance
    • It is acknowledged that adverse situations sometimes arise that impact on training commitments. To be fair and consistent for all, it is expected that the athlete communicate the circumstance formally, prior to the commencement of squad training or at the earliest opportunity, to the State Coaching Coordinator for consideration.

4.1    Regional Based State Training
  • Each country region may apply for a regional base training centre to support their athletes in preparation for the Nationals.
  • The selection criteria in relation to squad training attendance must still be met by regional athletes. That is, regional athletes, even when training with regional squads, must still attend at least 75% of weekend squad training sessions with the main squad.

5.0 Administration Information
  • Failure to complete or provide any requested documentation and associated fees by the due dates will result in the athlete being withdrawn from the state team.

  • If an athlete has paid and then has to withdraw due to injury or exceptional circumstance prior to 11 May 2009, a full reimbursement will be provided by JFA (NSW) Inc. within a reasonable time frame.

  • If an athlete has paid and has to withdraw, or fails to meet the 2009 State Selection Criteria and is withdrawn after 11 May 2009, reimbursement will made within a reasonable time frame, minus the entry fee cost and a $40.00 administration fee, by the JFA (NSW) Inc.

  • If, via exceptional circumstance, an athlete is included in the state team after 10 May 2009, the athlete will be responsible for paying the late entry fee imposed by the JFA Inc.

6.0 Miscellaneous
  • Athletes training or competing overseas will be granted exemption from NSW selection criteria 2009, for the duration of the time overseas provided that prior written permission has been sought from the State Coaching Coordinator.

  • Athletes who are current senior national champions have automatic entry to the 2009 JFA Inc. National Championships.

  • State Tracksuits. Only official members of the NSW team are permitted to wear the state tracksuit. Team members (athletes and officials) must wear their state tracksuits to, from and during the competition. It is mandatory that all selected players wear a current state tracksuit.

  • JFA Inc. athletes from other states and territories may participate in the three selection events.
  • Exemptions to the Selection Criteria are at the absolute discretion of the State Coaching Coordinator.
  • The State Coaching Coordinator will submit the list of members of the state team to the NSW BOM for approval.

2009 Rule Changes and interpretational adjustments.

As there has been some confusion on the interpretations on the new rules I have provided the following advice for clarification.

These new 2009 rule changes and interpretational adjustments are to be implemented by the IJF from January 1, 2009.

1. The score KOKA will no longer be called or scored in Judo Competition.
        I.            Landings on the buttock(s) or side of the thigh that were considered Koka may score Yuko if the throw is deliberate (skillful technique), has force and shows clear control. (IJF is working on a video to illustrate this)
II.            Throws where the landings to the buttock(s) or side of the thigh are borderline, partially lack control or are weak (soft) - Koka should not be scored. Landings to the front/side are not to be scored either.

2. Osaekomi Durations Partially
        I.            1 -14 seconds =                 No score (During Golden Score (Kinsa-Advantage))
      II.            15 -19 seconds =               Yuko
    III.            20- 24 seconds =               Waza-ari
    IV.            25 seconds =                      Ippon

3. Four shido penalties remain; the first one will now be a warning

        I.            The first shido will be awarded and displayed on the scoreboard, however, the opponent will NOT receive the score of Koka. Adapt for electronic boards.

      II.            During Golden Score:
a.       The first shido may be given by the referee without consultation with the judges.
b.      The free shido should not be considered in the hantei decision in Golden Score unless it is absolutely the only difference between the two athletes.
c.       The second shido may only be given after consultation with the judges. If 2 of the 3 officials agree to award the penalty, then the penalty is awarded and the contest is ended. If the team is split 2-1 against, the referee and judges just do not give the penalty and the Golden Score period continues. The referee and judges have the option of consulting with the Jury.

4. The Golden Score duration will change from length of the original contest to three minutes.
        I.            The decision for hantei is based only on the kinsas that occur during the Golden Score period.

5. Dynamic Edge (IJF Wording)
        I.            “All actions are valid and may continue (no Mate) as long as either contestant has some part of his (or her) body touching the contest area”. (Similar Ne-waza criterion is to be applied).
      II.            Commentary (Dynamic Edge)
a.       “Actions” are while the competitors are gripping (kumi kata) each other as long as they are moving rapidly, no attack (entry into a throw) need take place, but could take place.
b.      The cardinal principle to follow is Continuity of the Action and Dynamic Action.  A competitor in “action” may play in the safety area as long as either contestant has some part of his/her body touching the contest area. Any break in or stall of the action warrants Mate. This is very different from what we have been doing in the past. This is a more liberal application to allowing the fight to continue. However the referee and judges must be cognizant of the safety issues brought about by this change.
c.       After the original attack inside, award the appropriate score (if any) for any subsequent renraku-waza or kaeshi-waza whether one player is inside (contest area) or both are in the safety area (outside), as long as there is “continuity” and there is no clear break in the dynamic action.
d.      If the referee calls “Mate” in error and the judges believe the action and attack to be valid, they may nullify the Mate and score the throw. The Jury may be consulted 9and probably should be consulted).
e.      Any attack in the Dynamic Edge situation should have immediacy of result.

6. Article 27.1 Avoid taking hold (or preventing your opponent from taking hold)

        I.            This includes blocking to prevent kumi-kata. This includes covers (gripping one’s own lapel in order to prevent the opponent from gripping), hold-aways (gripping one’s lapel and pulling it away out of reach of one’s opponent) etc.
II.            This also now includes crushing (excessive obi-tori gripping). That is keeping the opponent in a bent-over posture using an over-the-back “crushing” grip to prevent kumi-kata.
III.            The time frame on this is generally more than five seconds.
IV.            Application of any negative judo penalties, such as refusal to grip should be made with logical (intuitive) timing and should be made in conjunction with the dynamic (spirit) of the contest.

7. Article 27 Excessively Defensive Posture

This prohibited act will be penalized more quickly. The goal is to discourage wrestling and wrestling style tactics.

8. Article 27 False Attack
        I.            The referee will be more vigilant in the enforcement of false attacks including diving at the legs without a clear attempt at a throw, drop seoi-nage without a clear attempt at a throw or similar unskillful attacks.
II.            These are mitigated of course by the opponent’s obvious defense. A failed genuine attack is not a false attack.

9. Article 27 Hikkomi unskillful take downs in order to enter Ne-waza
        I.            This includes unskillful tomoe-nage, unskillful sumi-gaeshi and similar unskillful attacks where the intent is to enter ne-waza and not to throw one’s opponent. These types of attacks should be penalized with shido.
II.            The uses of Tomoe-nage to enter into Juji-gatame or similar techniques (Hikkomi gaeshi) are acceptable as long as the attack is continuous and skillful.

10. Article 27 Pants Grasping
        I.            A player may NOT "first" grab the trouser leg(s) then attack, but may grab the trousers to assist in finishing an attack that has already been initiated. Grabbing the trousers first, results in an immediate Mate and (shido). Grabbing the pants in the midst of an ongoing attack or even simultaneously in order to finish the attack should not be stopped or penalized.
II.            Grabbing (Grasping) the leg (not pants) – arm-hook or hand-hook (as in Morote-gari and Kibisu-gaeshi) without grabbing the trousers/pants is still legal. These actions should not be stopped or penalized and any subsequent action should be scored.

Upcoming Events

December 2008 – January 2009 and beyond

Also keep an eye on our events calendar

Good Food Affare 2008

The event was a great success and the event managers will consider Castle Hill Showground again, albeit with the attendance numbers, a larger venue will also be considered.

Our hall was painted and now we are considering alternatives to stapling posters directly onto walls. Thanks to all those who assisted on the 16th, 17th and 25th November, including: Donna & Jake Young, Peter & Kevin Schmitz, Richard Lane, Guido Scholtz, the Da Silva family, Don McDougall, Alex Snoek, Andras Koltai, Jarrad Cooper, Nathan Wong, and Max Hale. I hope I didn’t miss anyone.

No Training - 17th - 25th November 2008 inclusive

The club will be closed for training from 17th November to 25th November inclusive. The reason is explained below.

In short, we have secured a commercial arrangement with ACP Magazines for the hire of the hall for a "Good Food Affare" in which the entire Showground will be occupied between 21st -23rd November with days either side for moving in and moving out

The "deal" will help us to do more work on the Dojo (building), allow purchase of more mats, and allow more funding to athletes, provide a goodwill benefit with ACP Magazines, goodwill benefit with the Showground because we will give them a one-off donation, goodwill benefit to BJJ and Aikido, because we will give them 2 months rent free for the missed sessions, and all 3 clubs will benefit because the hall may be painted in the process.

We will be allowed to leave all our filing cabinets in place, and will be able to store items in the change room which we would normally have to remove, because that area is being partitioned off from the rest of the hall. ACP are also providing labour to assist with us moving out and moving in, and extra on-site container storage, so it won't be as difficult as the move-out early in the year. The downside is that we have to move everything else out of the hall for one week 17/11/08 to 25/11/08.

We are arranging a small working bee for Sunday afternoon 16/11/08 at 3pm so that we can make some preparations. I believe that we have sufficient help for the 16/11 and I will oversee the 17/11 activities, but if anyone is interested in helping over this time, please see Rob. Club Committee members will assist on 16/11.

We will also start to remove all the posters and flags over the next few weeks so help from the dads watching their kids at training would be greatly appreciated.

For the move back into the hall, again we will have access to some labour on Tuesday 25/11/08 (6pm) to move the big stuff back from a storage container and from the shed next door. The Committee will be involved in this but we also seek assistance from anyone who can help from 6.00pm to locate the frame for the mats, secure the frame to the sub-floor, lay the mats, lay the wood-backed mats and timber frame at the crash-mat end of the hall, and relocate the carpet, furniture, trophy cabinet, tables, book case, etc. Again, please see Rob re your availability (it's normally a training night and you're sure to get a good workout!)

On Tuesday (25/11) night, while we move back into the hall, Kerrye may arrange something for the Juniors competing in the first selection event (30/11) with crash mats and running outside the hall. A separate note will be issued at training on this.

Although inconvenient (as we already have to move out once a year), this is an exceptional one-off opportunity and the Committee believes is in the best interests of the Club. See us if you need more detail.

Rob (On behalf of the Budokan Coaches and Committee)

Senior Gradings result

Congratulations to Jake Young, Jarrod Cooper, Max Hale, Shaun McDougall, and Kevin Da Silva who participated in both the first and the second Kata Course held at the club over the last few weeks. Congratulations to Mickael Gieules and Alex Snoek who participated in the first course and to Jennifer Purcell who participated in the second course. All up we spent over 8 hours on the mat. Thanks to Dale and to John Da Silva for your assistance during the courses.

As a result, Jake, Jarrod, and Max have been graded to senior Brown Belt, and Shaun to senior Blue Belt. Kevin has passed his Kata and is well on the way to fast-tracking his senior grades when he turns 16 later in the year. Alex and Mickael are well on their way to their senior Blue Belts and Jennifer to Sho Dan (Black Belt) at next year's State Grading.

Kata Session #2 - Preparation for Senior Grades

The Nage-No-Kata training session on 27/9 was very successful with 7 of the club's athletes well on the way to their next grade. I intend to convene another similar session to allow those who did the first course to complete the Kata and be examined and others who couldn't make the first one to catch up. The date/time is tentative and will be confirmed in the next week or so pending confirmation of sufficient numbers. The emphasis is on Judoka aiming for Senior Blue, Brown, and Black Belt (Dan) grades.

It is important that you confirm your position. Priority will be given to the original 7 athletes. There is room on the mat for only 5-6 pairs (ie 10-12 athletes). Videos and Kata sheets are included below.

Kata Session #2:

When: From 1.00pm ready on the mat, nominally to 4pm; Saturday 18th October 2008

National Intervarsity (IV) Games

Congratulations to Jennifer Purcell who won the U/57kg Senior Women's Category beating a Black Belt along the way, in the recently held IV Games in Melbourne representing Macquarie Uni. She also had to play a +70kg girl in the Teams event (go figure!!) and in the process dislocated her toe and aggravated her arm problem, maybe putting her out of VIOC.

Jake Farnsworth wins BJJ Nationals

Jake Farnsworth  won the Australian title for his division at the Machado Brazilian Jujitsu National Championships in Melbourne recently.Jake won 4 matches, 2 by submission, 1 by referee stoppage & his final match by points to take out the under 12's 20-28kg division

In BJJ, points are awarded for takedowns, throws, hold-downs and reversals on the ground. Jake is also a member of Budokan Judo Club and trains BJJ with his father Simon Farnsworth, a BJJ black-belt who runs Universal Combat Academy BJJ (Brazillian Jiu-jitsu) and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) in the Budokan hall.

Well done Jake!

Kata Session - Preparation for Seniors Sat. 27th September

Where: At the club
When: From 1.00pm ready on the mat, nominally to 4pm; Saturday 27th September
Cost: Free to eligible club Seniors only
Recommend learning the sequence of throws before, take notes on the day, need Judogi and patience

Kata sheet attached

(Sequence (3 sets):

1. Uki Otoshi, Ippon Seoi Nage, Kata Guruma
2. Uki Goshi, Harai Goshi, Tsuri Komi Goshi
3. Okuri Ashi Barai, Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi, Uchi Mata

Nage-No-Kata is a pre-arranged sequence of throws throwing techniques.

The kata is composed of 3 techniques from each of the five throw groups in judo: hand techniques (Te Waza), hip techniques (Goshi Waza), foot techniques (Ashi Waza), rear sacrifice techniques (Ma Sutemi Waza) and side sacrifice techniques (Yoko Sutemi Waza).

Each of these 15 techniques is performed twice in the specified order, once to the right and once to the left. Seniors (over 16 years) who aspire to Blue Belt (2nd Kyu) and above, are required by the club coaches to perform some of the sets of Nage-No-Kata as part of their Grading (3 sets for Blue Belt and 4 sets for Brown Belt).

This better prepares the Judoka for Black Belt Grading where all 5 sets must be performed with precision. We have a number of seniors who should be graded to Green, Blue, Brown, and Black Belts over the coming months and a Nage-No-Kata session is being offered to these athletes. It is not practical to run such a session during general training.
