Honing skills at Olympic Solidarity Camp
Olympic solidarity camps are held all around the world
as part of the Olympic Judo Federation's strategy to
improve the standard of judo in member countries.
Budokan had seven representatives amongst the almost
30 strong squad of selected judokas Australia wide.
The Camp was held at the Australian Institute of Sport,
Canberra between 10-17 March 2002.
Peter Herrmann, National Head Coach and Chairman of
the National Coaching Commission directed the camp,
and the training was conducted by the appointed Olympic
Solidarity expert Yukiharu Yoshitaka, 6 Dan from Japan.
Yoshitaka is a former Japa competitor he also won many
international competitions including Czechand US OpensTournament
of Paris Universiades Goodwill Games.

International Sports Administration Appointment
During the past year, Rob has been
liaising with "Manchester 2002 Ltd" (XVII Commonwealth
Games Organising Committee), regarding issues and lessons
learned from the Olympic Games which may apply to the
Commonwealth Games Judo Competition. On learning that
Rob had not applied for any National Coaching appointments
during 2002, his Manchester contact approached him with
a view to determining interest in a short-term employment
opportunity at the Commonwealth Games as a sport specialist
in the Judo Results Systems area. Rob has negotiated
a 2 1/2 week tenure, from 15 July to 1 August inclusive.
Subsequently, Rob obtained approval from his work to
undertake this appointment. Like his earlier SOCOG appointment,
this employment presents a significant opportunity for
Rob and also allows some benefit to be realised from
his Olympic Games experience.
International Judo Federation (IJF) Organisational
Seminar
The 6th Annual IJF Meetings
and Seminar is being held on 14thto 19 April
in the ancient city of Cairo in Egypt. The purpose of
the technical seminars is for the relevant IJF specialist
Commissions to convene interactive meetings between
Judoka from all over the world, representing their Continental
Unions, to discuss refereeing, coaching, and competition
organisation and management issues. The JFA Inc endorsed
JFA NSW's nomination of Rob, and the Oceania Judo Union
(OJU) executive has voted their approval for Rob to
attend. The timing of the seminar will be ideal build-up
to Rob's appointment at the Commonwealth Games.
JUDO DEMONSTRATION AT CASTLE HILL SHOW
Budokan members turned up in great numbers to put
on a judo demonstration for visitors at the Castle Hill
Show on Saturday 9 March. Using our
wood-backed demonstration mats, we were located on the
grassed area outside the oval to the North East side
of the Showground near the pavilion. The demonstration
is a great opportunity to expose Judo to the local community,
to promote the club and recruit new members. It is always
well received and participants, pictured below, got
free entry to the Show.
DISCOUNTED Judo Video Sales
By agreement with the National Distributor of Fighting
Films Videos, the club is now also selling videos to
order. While use of the video loan library is restricted
to Budokan Club members, ordering of videos for sale
is available to anyone both within or outside the club
interested in any "Fighting Films" released video. Please
see Rob. If an order of 20 or more videos is received,
significant postage costs will be saved and you can
buy each tape for $65. This is a $5 saving per tape
compared to purchase from the Australian Distributor
of "Fighting Films" videos and about $15 savings per
tape if buying direct from the UK. The 2001 Munich World
Championships set (Lightweights and Heavyweights) is
now available at $130 (or $65 each). Hurry with your
order or you may miss out. Videos of many World Championships
and Olympic Games and other international events back
to 1998 are also available as are the action videos
series of "101 Ippons", the unedited study tapes of
many international competitions, and finally numerous
teaching tapes by Briggs, Adams, Koga, and others, on
every aspect of Judo. You can see the full list of available
titles at http://www.fightingfilms.com/main.htm.
Coaches Corner
State Coaching
Budokan senior member and Assistant Coach, Dale Keogh
has been appointed as the State Coach for the NSW Girls
Team (U/16yrs) to the 2002 Nationals. She has nominated
fellow Budokan coach, Barbara Stratford, as her assistant.
With the withdrawal of the Junior Women's Coach, Dale
has also now been appointed Coach for the Junior Women's
team. Congratulations Dale and Barbara.
International Coaching
Kerrye's appointment as Junior (U/20yrs) Women's National
Team Coach to the Oceania Championships to be held in
Wellington, New Zealand (1-3 June 2002) has been confirmed.
Rob and Kerrye continue their role in co-ordinating
the National Squad training sessions at Budokan on Wednesdays
at 7:30-9:00pm.
Training Activities:
Illawarra International Judo Camp:
26-27 Jan 02- Budokan was well represented with
the following 15 club members participating: Rob, Kerrye
and Morgan coaching (and also training), and Patrick
and Rory Waite, Peter, Ben, and Nick Zellner, JamesDuffy,
Janelle Shepherd, Jessica Malone, Jovan and Nikola Pejic,
Daniel Mitchell, and Frankie Serrano. The camp exploded
on Saturday afternoon during the Randori (free practice)
session with over 60 athletes and coaches training on
the mat. Athletes from NSW, Queensland, Victoria, ACT
and Northern Territory attended, many sleeping overnight
in the venue. It was a terrific camp and the club will
continue to support it. It is suitable for Judoka of
all ages who are at competition level.
Club Visits:
Visit to Parramatta PCYC
4 and 6 March 2002. Budokan visited Parramatta
PCYC on two occasions during the period when our mats
were stored for the Castle Hill Show. Thanks to Olivier
Rochesson.
National Squad: Wednesdays 7:30-9:00.
The National Squad Training sessions at Budokan which
commenced on 24 October 2001 continue. In the 18 sessions
convened since training resumed this year, numbers have
been very good at both Wednesday and Saturday sessions
with Budokan's Wednesday sessions averaging 23 athletes.
It is hoped that the venues for the National Training
sessions will move to Olympic Park, Homebush Bay, in
May.
New Under 10 session - Wednesdays 6:30-7:30pm.
From 13th March 2002, Budokan commenced a new training
session. The session is for all Under 10s (Mons), beginners
or graded players. Under 10s must attend this session
before being allowed to train on Tuesdays or Thursdays
and then only with Instructor approval.
Safety in the Dojo - Reminder -
The Coaches and Committee have ruled that there is to
be no playing on any equipment. While the coaches are
instructing on the mat, it is difficult for them to
control off-mat activity. The assistance of parents
and associates is sought to prevent injury.
Attendance Register
Judokas are requested to ensure they sign the attendance
sheet each session. The records are used to assist the
coaches to determine Judokas to be graded and to enter
competitions, and in the determination of annual awards.
