The Year that was 2002

The past year has been another successful year for the Budokan Judo Club. The success has been measured by the growth in membership, the number of athletes performing in tournaments, the number of medals won in competition and the increasing number of Budokan judokas representing Australia on the international scene.

While we enjoy these successes it must be remembered the club's priority is always to meet the needs of its athletes, regardless of what level they are at. Our priority is to provide a service to them and to motivate and encourage their active participation and the achievement of their individual goals.

2002 Highlights:
  • Membership - In Dec 2000, 31 members; Dec 2001, 73; and now in Dec 2002, we have 92 members including 6 Associate Members who are non-playing parents. In 2 years, we have grown three fold.
  • Communications - improved our member communications and club promotion through distribution of our professionally produced Newsletter, and our strong relationship with the "Hills News" paper has resulted in a number of published articles.
  • International visitors - hosted visits from a number of clubs including 2 from New Caledonia, and we have over 20 club and family members interested in a visit to New Caledonia during the July 2003 school holidays.
  • Under 10s - commenced a highly successful dedicated U/10s MONs session on Wednesdays with now over 20 regular participants, and we have extended the Tuesday and Thursday training session times for Juniors.
  • Merchandising - successfully merchandised Judogis, key rings, T-Shirts, judo bags, and have created a popular judo video library.
  • Extending - retained our agreement with Tumbletime Gymnastics and have expanded the Budokan base by forming an agreement with Makotokan Aikido Club.
  • Tournament - hosted the most successful Judo NSW "MONS" event for 2002 for the State's U/10 members,
  • Sponsors - maintained our relationships with a number of sponsors and achieved another major sponsor in Acron Building Services - thank you to Joe and Cathy Bracks.
  • Building repairs - entered an agreement with the Showground Society to insulate, ventilate and seal the roof of the building, and we have further plans for building enhancements including change rooms.
  • New assets - club now also owns a gas heater for our spectators, a set of accurate scales for the athletes, a competition scoreboard, and a BBQ.
  • Website - A highlight for the year is the recent establishment of the Budokan web-site. Trend Marking Systems continues its sponsorship of the club by paying for the hosting of the club website at www.ourdetails.com/budokanThank you Guido for its development and management.
  • Financial assistance - the club sponsored 15 of our elite junior and senior athletes to a total of $1200 to support travel and accommodation costs to national and international competitions.

Gymnastic equipment

A reminder to all judokas: no one is allowed to play on the gymnastic equipment. We know it is not easy to stay off of it, particularly for younger athletes who are waiting for the senior's training session to finish, but for safety reasons this rule must be adhered to. The club cannot accept any responsibility for any injuries which may be incurred. Parents, please help us and ensure your child stays off the trampoline and all other gym apparatus.

Donation

On returning from the Junior World Championships in September, Janelle Shepherd presented Kerrye and Rob with Tee Shirts from the championships and a display of the competition mascots for the club's cabinet, as well as a BBQ for the club - thank you for your generosity Janelle.

New Sponsor for Building Fund

After the Awards Night on 12th December, Dale Keogh, Life Vice President of the club and Assistant Coach, presented Kerrye (in true Dale style, on the quiet) with a $2000 cheque to assist in the development of the building. Technique of the day for Budokan went to Nick Zellner for his unmatched consistent and tenacious follow-up to his Tachi-Waza (throws) into solid Ne-Waza (groundwork). Club to visit New Caledonia Judo clubs in July 2003

During 2002, Budokan hosted training visits for two New Caledonian judo clubs. Both these clubs have invited Budokan to visit and train with them in 2003. Rob and Kerrye are planning to take a group of athletes to New Caledonia in July 2003. Expenses will have to be met by the athletes and their families, but it should be a fantastic, family judo trip.

Any athlete under the age of 13 years must be accompanied by a parent. The trip is planned to take place during the July school holidays. Enquiries can be directed to Kerrye Katz.

Budokan has set up a special savings account for the trip. If you are interested in using it see Kerrye or Annette Finch.

BUDOKAN JUDO CLUB HOSTS ITS FIRST STATE COMPETITION

In Judo, Under 10 years age group is called "MONS" (as opposed to "Yonen" for Under 13s, "Shonen" for Under 16s and "Seinen" for Over 16s). In late 2001, Judo NSW initiated a concept for the Under 10s MONS group called the MONSter League, whereby all NSW clubs were given the opportunity to nominate as hosts for one of a number of MONSter League competitions to be held during 2002 on behalf of Judo NSW. The MONSter initiative promotes an enjoyable introduction to competition judo for Under 10 players; it recognises and rewards aLL participants, encourages skill development and learning while promoting fair play in a safe, supportive environment. The NSW Judo MONSter League logo is the Koala.

On 29th September, Budokan Judo Club Castle Hill hosted the 5th and final MONSter League competition for 2002. This event had the highest participation with 44 little MONSters representing 11 clubs from Woy Woy to Wollongong, and Willoughby to Campbelltown. Budokan Sumo club staged a demonstration and with sausage sizzles, guessing competitions, raffles, and merchandising of special edition MONSter T Shirts and Key Rings.

Budokan had 11 athletes competing in the event, 8 competing for the first time. The club came in second in the club medal tally behind Bushido Club, with: 2 Gold Medals, 3 Silver medals, 2 Bronze Medals, 2 x 4th places, and 2 unplaced athletes.

Budokan Club results were:
Boys Graded O/40kg Liam Waite 2nd
Boys Graded U/30kg Nathan Katz 4th
Boys Novice U/25kg Bradley Phillips 1st
Boys Novice U/25kg Joshua Kim 3rd
Girls Novice U/25kg Sara Aiscough 1st
Girls Novice U/25kg Emily Zellner 3rd
Boys Novice U/30kg Billy Katsiris unplaced
Boys Novice U/30kg Keiren Kumulia unplaced
Boys Novice U/35kg Hamish Firth
(who also won the award for the Best Groundwork.)
2nd
Girls Novice U/40kg Lauren Franks 2nd
Girls Novice U/40kg Nikki Freris 4th

The club's coaches, Rob and Kerrye Katz are grateful to the 40 volunteers from Budokan and neighbouring clubs who assisted with the officiating, catering, and the enormous preparation that goes into staging such an event.

Senior Beginners Session Budokan will conduct a 5-week 'Come and Try' judo session early in the New Year. The session will be run by Rob Katz and is specifically aimed at parents.

If you are interested, tell Rob.
