MONster success at 2010 tournament!

On the 8th August 2010, Budokan Judo Club hosted its 9th annual MONSter (U/10s) competition staged since the JFA introduced them in 2002. Budokan is one of only 2 clubs in NSW who have maintained the tradition of hosting the State-wide event on behalf of the JFA(NSW). This year we included for the first time a club-hosted NSW U/14s age competition which, like the U/10s, also had a provision for novice (yellow belt) divisions. This makes such an event a real education for less experienced Judoka and introduces the formalities and pressure of a competition in a very friendly environment.

Despite the increase in numbers in U/10s from last year and the addition of the 14s category, the event ran like clockwork, thanks to the club’s many enthusiastic volunteers and helpers and the NSW referees, who officiated the matches. Thanks to the referees who officiated: John Da Silva, Ernie Wakamatsu, Rodney Moulder, John Panopoulos, and Karen Da Silva for a job well done.

As has been the case since 2008, we had state-of-the-art technology with the JFA(NSW)’s electronic scoring and timing system and the large flat-screen monitor. Thanks to the JFA for the loan of the screen and laptop. Thanks so much to the many Budokanis who donated items for the hampers, who assisted with the securing of sponsors, who took the time out to help on Saturday to prepare for the event, and who helped run the event so smoothly on Sunday and then stayed back to pack and clean up.

Thanks to Castle Trophies who once again gave us a very good price on the quality trophies, to Joseph’s Selective Meats at Kellyville for heavily discounting the sausages and bacon for the BBQ, to Nestle for sponsoring hampers for the raffle and Sue Leishman for arranging this, and to Kathy Dundas for donating the hamper of Avon products.

Those who attended the event last year might recall that the number of participants for the MONSters was at an all-time low with only 28 compared to 48 in 2008 and 36 in 2007. Happily, this year we had 44 participants in the MONSter competition and 43 in the U/14s competition. Whereas last year 11 clubs participated, this year 13 clubs participated in the MONSters and the U/14s. There were some great matches and even some going to golden score, with all athletes putting on a great spectacle of technique and spirit. We received many positive comments from visiting parents and coaches during and after the competition which is again very encouraging and motivating.

The 13 clubs represented and numbers participating were: Budokan (16 MONSters compared to 13 last year, and 18 U/14s for a total of 34 participants), Blacktown City and Blacktown PCYC (10, a large increase compared to last year), new country club Yuukan (7, which is fantastic for a developing club), Penrith PCYC (5 compared to 2 last year), Zen Bu (4 compared to 1 last year); Illawarra, Campbelltown and Uni NSW (each with 3, none of whom participated last year),  Kido (2 compared to 1 last year), Sutherland and Willoughby (each with 2, neither participating last year), and Woy Woy and Bushido (each with 1, compared to 1 and 2 respectively last year.

There were 15 contested divisions in the MONSters age category and only 3 uncontested divisions with 68 matches compared to 50 last year. Of the 15 divisions, 4 were special combined divisions to create as many matches as we could generate. Budokan’s 16 MONSters did particularly well winning 7 divisions, coming second in 7 divisions and third in 2 divisions as well as winning three of the special awards as voted by the referees and club officials.

In the U/14s age category, we also had 15 contested divisions (2 being special combined) and only 1 uncontested division with 73 matches. Budokan’s 18 athletes also did particularly well winning 11 divisions, coming second in 5 divisions and third in 5 divisions as well as winning three of the special awards as voted by the referees and club officials.

Each year, we tell everyone that staging this event is no mean feat by any organisational standards. This year it was a bigger challenge; with the much larger numbers of athletes participating, we could only guess the numbers, divisions, trophies and how best to stage the extra age category. To stage the event so well this year taking every opportunity to make it a real spectacle and experience for our MONSters and the U/14s and their supporters is really gratifying for us as well as for all the participating athletes and spectators.

The support shown by our Budokan helpers, from the committee, parents and siblings of our MONSters and 14s, to our older Juniors and our Seniors, and from parents and siblings of non-competing athletes, again showed the spirit that is true “BUDOKAN”.

With the fantastic response this year in terms of participating clubs and numbers, including a number of new clubs, the event was a huge success regarding the cross-section of clubs, the enjoyment and enthusiasm of the athletes and spectators, and of course the valuable exposure and profiling of the club in the local area and to the Judo community.

There are many people who did many jobs and at the risk of leaving people out, we should at least attempt to list as many as we can because you all deserve a big congratulations and

"!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
