Results - Kyu Grades and Masters Competition - 12th July

Seven Budokan seniors participated in the JFA(NSW) Kyu grades and Masters Competition nearly two weeks ago resulting in 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals and a bronze medal. The primary purpose of this competition is to match similar graded judoka in general weight groups and provide an opportunity for accumulating points for their next grading. Our 7 guys had 27 fights and won over 140 competition points towards their next grading. It is important for all athletes to keep a record of competitions with the name and grade of the opponent and the winning score. In summary:

  • Newly graded Orange Belt Andre D'Souza had it tough in his very first competition, and in the 70kg (Orange/Green) division fought two bigger green belts who were too experienced but he learned a lot from his experience.
  • Jake Young only had one fight in the Blue and Brown belt lightweight category which he won with a nice Ippon from Osoto Gari
  • Jake Hickey and Shimin Ou (who was just graded to Green Belt), both won their pool of 4 in the same division (Orange and Green Belts U/90kg). Both won their 3 matches with convincing Ippons, and got good practice with Shime Waza (strangles) being the method of winning for 3 of their 6 matches.  Then in the final pool, Jake lost one of his two matches walking onto a Seoi Nage, but beat Shimin in the other match with Kouchi Gari. Unfortunately Shimin lost both his final pool matches, one to Jake, and the other from a Harai Goshi which he also walked onto directly from a grip. So Jake came 2nd and Shimin 4tha great effort by both guys who attacked well and followed up vigorously in Ne Waza.
  • Jarrad Cooper was on fire and in his first match threw Shaun McDougall for Ippon with a Seoi Nage in the Mens Blue and Brown Belt 100kg division. He won his next match with Juji Gatame (arm lock) and then lost to his very tall opponent with a Tani Otoshi switch. In his final match against another very tall opponent (brother of previous opponent), he played aggressively scoring a Yuko from Kaeshi Waza (counter technique) and then following up with Osae Komi (hold down) for Ippon. He ended up winning the division on points.
  • Shaun has had many better competitions and after losing to Jarrad, absolutely dropped a very tall Brown belt with a great drop Seoi nage for Ippon. Whilst this should have given him confidence, he did not regain his aggressive composure and lost his last two matches being unplaced on the day.
  • Bryan Medbury played in the Men's Masters Age Division winning his two matches by Ippon with Osae Komi and Tai Otoshi respectively. In the Open Masters, he won 3 of his 4 matches, two by Ippon with strong Tai Otoshis and one by Osae Komi. A great day overall for Bryan winning 5 of 6 matches, all by Ippon and gaining a Gold and Silver medal!
So in all a very good day for our athletes and the club.
